I moved into Oak Lodge in March 2020. The carers have been great; they look after me so well. The manager is easy to talk to, and the entire team is lovely. I feel at home, and I can visit my family.

Reception arrangements non existent. All information has to be extracted, never volunteered. Room cleanliness was variable. No consideration went into my food needs as a diabetic. Staff were generally found to be very good. The carer is brilliant. Standard of cooking, particularly vegetables, was excellent.

Reply from Katherine Mahoney, Home Manager at West Hall

Thank you for taking the time to review West Hall following your recent respite stay. We are pleased you rate our facilities and management as excellent and we will pass on your kind comments to our care team. Mum has enjoyed more than 5 years of care at West Hall managing complex health needs. The staff are friendly and have worked tirelessly to combat the Covid threat. She is happy and loves all the attention and laughs she has with the staff who are very dedicated.

It’s a beautiful setting and rooms/service/food are of high quality. Cost does run high but quality is good.

This home is just wonderful. I can't say how pleased I am with the manager and her team. They care so much, put heart and soul into their work. One particular staff member is wonderful but it's unfair to single out staff in Birch Lodge as all the carers are excellent. The communication paths are also first-class. My husband is so happy and well cared for - thank you all.

My father moved there in January 2020 after a fall and the hard realisation that my mother could no longer care for him at home. After visiting so many care homes, West Hall had a wonderful feel to it, with very caring staff, happy residents and beautiful gardens. My dad became seriously ill this year and sadly died in February. The staff at Birch Lodge were truly wonderful, their compassionate nature and understanding of dementia is truly so heartwarming to see. Dad had a good routine there, always exceptionally clean and well cared for, food was wonderful and accommodated all of dad's needs. A special mention to the wonderful staff leading the team with the managers so supportive and understanding to the family truly was wonderful. It’s such a hard decision to put your loved one into a care home but this was definitely the best decision for our dad and we hope when we can to go back and say hello to the team again. Thank you for all you have done for my dad.

The care and nursing standards are excellent - the team go way beyond standards of any set in their affection and support given to my father. My dad has stayed in two previous care home, and West Hall is by far the best. Having Dad in a care home is a difficult decision, but my family and I are secure in the knowledge Birch Lodge is the next best thing to a home. I cannot praise the team highly enough - amazing!

The period of Covid has been dealt with superbly and infection spread has been zero. Isolated cases were dealt with and all due to excellent protocols and good management. It has been so hard not seeing my dad but so worth it as he is well and happy and we are almost back to normal. Patience as they say is rewarded. Thank you to the Birch Lodge team.

During this difficult period, the staff in Birch lodge have been outstanding. Always positive on the phone and saying encouraging things about our loved ones. The team is headed by an exceptional person in her care and understanding of my husband's dementia. Her kindness and patience enable him to be as content as he can be. This means so much to me. All the staff have shown enormous forbearance and kindness during this testing time. West Hall sets a very high standard in all respect. With my admiration and enormous thanks.

If I thought West Hall was fabulous before, seeing how the team have coped during the pandemic has been awesome! To a man and woman, they have done everything to support both the residents and their families and even in the darkest days, were there for us all. I have always said West Hall gave my father a new lease of life when he arrived over five years ago. To have kept him going and cheery throughout the last 12 months is testament to an amazing team.

Our mother resides in Birch Lodge, she's been here for over a year. We as a family are comforted by the care and love shown to her, it is encouraging as Mum suffers with progressive dementia. Mum is thriving, though sometimes in need of reassurance, which abounds. Most importantly she is happy and therefore so are we.

Paula Rifai
Paula RifaiJob Title:General ManagerJoined: 2025

I’m writing to introduce myself as the new General Manager of West Hall. I have had the privilege of working in the care sector for the past 35 years, and during this time, I have grown both professionally and personally. My journey started as a Carer, and through dedication and passion, I advanced to Senior Carer, Head of Care, Deputy Manager, and Acting Manager, before ultimately becoming a Registered Manager. For the past 26 years, I have been a Registered Manager with various care companies, where I have had the opportunity to achieve outstanding results, including two excellent outcomes and a "Good" rating with an Outstanding "Well Led" outcome in my previous care home.

Throughout my career, I’ve embraced every opportunity to enhance my skills and qualifications, ensuring that I meet the evolving standards and regulations required for this role. I joined Anchor in January 2023 as the Registered Care Home Manager for Moore Place, where I was thrilled to lead the team to achieve the top score of 10 on independent website carehome.co.uk. Our hard work paid off when Moore Place was ranked among the Top 20 Care Homes in the South East in 2024.

I am excited to take on the role of General Manager for West Hall. I am looking forward to working with the dedicated team here, getting to know the residents and their families, and leading West Hall to new heights. My vision is to work collaboratively with everyone, ensuring that we provide the highest standard of care and continue to thrive as a home.

Gary Dunn
Gary DunnJob Title:Deputy General ManagerJoined: 2025

It is my privilege to introduce myself as your new Deputy General Manager of West Hall. I have been working in the care sector for the past 10 years with my journey starting in my hometown of Swindon, where I worked in domiciliary care while maintaining the CQC Outstanding rating.

The wealth of experience and knowledge gained led me to continue with my passion to work within this sector. I moved to Surrey in 2019 and gained a position within Anchor as Team Leader at Moore Place. Throughout this time, I have seen many changes, working with a talented, and passionate team which we ensured Moore Place was recognised as a CQC “Good” rated care home in 2022 and Top 20 Care Home for the South East in 2024. For the past 12 months I have been in an Acting Deputy Manager role, successfully overseeing operational changes and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

This new chapter in my career at West Hall is an exciting opportunity, not only to work alongside such an outstanding team but also establishing a good rapport with residents and families alike.

I look forward to meeting you all and to continue the success of West Hall.

Sophie Waite
Sophie WaiteJob Title:Wellbeing ManagerJoined: 2025

I joined West Hall as the Wellbeing Manager in April 2025, and I’m thrilled to be part of such an incredible team. I graduated with a Drama degree in 2014 and began my career in care in February 2018. Since then, I’ve worked with a few different care providers, gaining valuable experience along the way. I truly believe I have the best job and have never looked back.

In addition to my experience, I commission the activities department for a new build care home, building close relationships with residents and their families, and ensuring the activity programme was designed to best support residents’ wellbeing and engagement.

During my time in care, I’ve been able to apply my creative skills to develop engaging and inclusive activity programmes. I’ve planned and organised a wide range of events and activities, including summer parties, Bonfire Night celebrations, archery sessions, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy sessions for residents living with dementia, and a unique ‘12 Weeks Around the World’ programme where residents virtually explore different countries through their culture, food, music, and traditions.

I’m passionate about delivering one-to-one activities and engagement to ensure we meet every resident’s needs, especially creating programmes tailored for those living with dementia. The most rewarding part of my role is building personal connections with residents and their families, which allows me to tailor activities that reflect the interests and preferences of everyone living in the home.

Mark Wren
Mark WrenJob Title:Services ManagerJoined: 2017

I am the Services Manager at Anchor West Hall and have been in this role since the beginning of January 2024, overseeing several departments which include catering, housekeeping, maintenance and activities. Supporting my colleagues and interacting with the residents here are the highlights of my day, and I couldn’t ask for a more picturesque location to work in; the manor house and grounds of West Hall are truly exquisite.

Overseeing the Hospitality and services of the home gives me the opportunity to work collaboratively with each head of department, ensuring that West Hall does not just meet the needs of the residents, but exceeds them every day by providing the level of care and service that our CQC rating of ‘Outstanding’ truly deserves.
