I helped to arrange to get my mother-in-law's partner, who had dementia, into The Potteries care home. It was very important to us all, that this was the right home for him and know that he was going to be fully cared for and made to feel like this was his actual home. I can honestly say that out of
the worst situation we found ourselves in, this was the best choice we could have made for him. The staff are amazing. They looked after him and made sure that his partner was also cared for, as she made the transition from him being home to living somewhere else. The place is so clean, the food looked excellent and there is always someone around to discuss any worries with. He sadly passed away recently, but I know that we did the best that could have done and we have The Potteries staff to thank for that.

What a wonderful home staffed by wonderful people. The whole experience of accommodating my mum and making her feel settled has been amazing. They have been sensitive and patient to her needs and whenever we visit the staff make you feel welcomed and not like you are intruding. The food is excellent
as is the never-ending supply of tea and biscuits! Wouldn't want Mum to be anywhere else and would recommend to anyone considering care. Every single member of staff will speak to the residents by name and is always ready with a smile. Thank you The Potteries.

This may not be a fair review, but from what I have seen during the covid restrictions, everyone has done their best to make my wife's residence as safe and happy as possible. It is lovely to see her face light up at the mention of cakes! She has certainly enjoyed the food and is looking forward to
more outdoor trips and walks. Hopefully, we will meet more staff and experience more of what The Potteries has on offer, now that access is less restricted.

A very professional and well-managed care home. Everyone from reception, admin staff, carers, domestics and activity staff have been very welcoming to me, but especially to my elderly father. I would personally recommend The Potteries.

A very close friend had a couple of falls and was starting to get confused. I thought the Potteries would be the ideal solution as I was going away and he would have very little or no support, sadly. It was a totally different environment for him to deal with and maybe just added to his confusion; as
a consequence, he continued to have more falls. What I feel I learnt from this experience is moving into a different environment can sometimes set someone back a lot more. It needs to be very carefully thought out. The spiral downwards has continued and he is now quite poorly in hospital. Covid also has had a massive inpact on staffing and getting support. It made it very difficult for doctors to visit.

When it came to choosing a care home for my Mum during the final stage of her life, when I was no longer able to look after her at home, the Potteries was the obvious choice as Mum had spent annual respite visits there and had always enjoyed it. We were impressed by the facilities, the food, the cleanliness
of all areas. In November, Mum came to the Potteries after a short spell in hospital and the management were so helpful in finding a place for her as her need for a calm, caring and familiar atmosphere was desperately needed at that time. The very dedicated staff did all that they could to care for her and to make her 94th birthday very special, even though there was no face to face visiting at that time. In the last week of Mum's life, we were able to sit with Mum for long periods with no time restrictions and we will always be thankful for the compassion that the staff showed to enable this and for their support for us as relatives. Thoroughly recommended!

Mum was in respite care at The Potteries for five weeks. Staff listened and responded to her initial needs and preferences, e.g. a footstool to raise her legs, extra pillow for her feet in bed, orientation, learning to use the "remote" etc. All possessions were taken to be labelled. Washing came back
quickly and correctly. Mum shared a meal table with "similar" residents, so was able to have conversations.
The Potteries is extremely "Covid friendly". No one is allowed in without sanitising, testing, form filling for ID, and then all must wash hands on entry. Visiting is limited to ensure safety, but it is always possible to make an appointment to see residents. Staff are supportive of relatives as well as residents. Doctors/chiropodists/hairdressers visit to cater for all needs. Activities are always planned but sometimes cancelled due to staff illness. Food was plentiful. Mum would have preferred more fresh veg. There was always plenty of fruit.
Some ground floor rooms have doors opening onto "gardens", so it is always possible to get fresh air, even if residents are not able to get out unaided. Mum was "wheeled" out to the local woods one day, and had three baths during her stay, something she has not been able to do for the last 15-years.
Despite "Covid" restrictions, the home has a very friendly atmosphere. Mum really enjoyed her time and is likely to return for respite care or permanently in the future.
Thank you to all the staff, who made her stay so lovely, gave her a rest and enabled me to have a break. You are all caring, lovely people.

My mother-in-law was a resident in the care home and then the nursing suite for only 5 weeks, however, she had amazing care from the staff who she became very close. Nothing was too much trouble. She had a lovely from with all her things around her. The care was exceptional and the support we received
as a family was truly amazing. The total staff from management to domestic etc was incredible.

My mum has settled well at The potteries. During this time, the staff have been brilliant in supporting me, my brother, and of course, my mum with this transition from home to care during Covid restrictions. Staff are very approachable with any concerns, and I feel they have my mums best interest safely
and care as a top priority. They also make it fun and relaxed for my mum. They give great medical and pastoral care, meeting my mums emotional and physical needs.

I have been a resident for over two years now. During this time, I have felt very happy and contented, so this place suits me! Needless to say, it is not the same as being at home, but probably the very best thing, as one ability to cope with life lessons. We do sometimes feel that a little more information
about what is going on would be useful as some of us are able to think for ourselves still. In retrospect, I would say that The Potteries has been very well run, especially during these difficult times. Thank you to everyone who helps at The Potteries - it is good to be with you.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at The PotteriesThank you for your feedback – we’re extremely pleased to hear your positive comments, and we are so happy to have you at The Potteries with us. We are pleased to confirm that we have recently appointed a new lifestyle lead, who has already held a residents meeting and completed a survey to gain feedback on how we can improve our activities. It is important for us to involve residents in the planning of activities to ensure we cater for all interests and preferences. The lifestyle lead has created a weekly planner of activities, which she has shared with the residents and displayed around the home, and we are confident that it will appeal to everyone!

Both my parents have been in The Potteries during the last two years. Very happy with the care given to both. Sadly Mum and dies last August, we were lucky to be with her at her time of death, and the staff were very caring and compassionate. Dad has very bad dementia, but the staff care for him well
and keep us informed of any changes as we cannot see him. The staff are always friendly and understanding.

Mum moved to The Potteries just over a year ago and has always said how helpful and kind the staff are to her. 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year in so many ways, for so many people, but The Potteries have done their utmost to keep families in contact with their loved ones, from photos on Facebook
to FaceTime calls on a weekly basis, socially distanced visits when allowed and telephone calls to the family when Mum was feeling down. More recently, they have been fantastic with Mum being so poorly; their kindness, care, compassion, consideration and support to us as a family has been invaluable in such difficult circumstances. Nothing is ever too much trouble. Thank you to The Potteries for caring for Mum in such a very special way.

I could not have found a better home for my partner, even in these terrible trying times. It was recommended by a previous employer, nurses and the mental health team to look at the Potteries nursing home. Nobody wants to see a loved one enter a home, even in good times, but I can honestly say the staff
and everyone are so helpful, it really has eased the pain knowing she is being loved and cared for. I would always recommend this home (and I have), knowing what their care is. I would like to think this would put other family's minds at rest in choosing a home for a loved one, and let's face it, it's one of the hardest decisions one has to make.

My mum has settled into The Potteries very well which I’m so happy about. I can tell she’s content and likes all the attention from the kindly nursing staff. There is always home baking going on for birthday cakes and the food always looks delicious. Mum likes her bedroom and has commented that her
bed is very comfortable. There is always plenty of mental stimulation for Mum in the form of games and sing songs. It has been a great help to be able to visit Mum (social distancing) during these difficult times. Also FaceTime has been a godsend. Well done The Potteries.

The Potteries have been so helpful and caring during a very difficult time for us as a family. My dad became a resident in September and the customer relations manager and suite manager have been very understanding and supportive to us in navigating a process we haven’t been through before. Dad seems
settled and well cared for. Although I have not been inside the home yet due to Covid restrictions the reports I have from other people who have relatives here are very complimentary. I have been able to see Dad’s room via FaceTime and have been able to visit him. The home have been very proactive in observing Covid regulations and are striving to keep everyone safe and well as far as I can see.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.807)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.807) out of 10 for The Potteries is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 39 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.807 for The Potteries is calculated as follows: ( (388 Excellents x 5) + (56 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 460 Ratings = 4.807
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Potteries is based on 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 38 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I began my social care career as a carer and worked my way up. That’s given me a very helpful perspective and understanding of what my team does. Even now, I’m always ready to roll up my sleeves and help if the need arises.

I believe that effective care is personalised care. Our team gets to know each resident well. We know what they enjoy doing, and we help them to continue to experience those things.

It’s also vital to keep up-to-date with developments in care so that we can bring benefits to residents. We recently took delivery of a Tovertafel, or ‘magic table’, which uses the latest technology to enable residents to play simple, fun interactive games, either on their own or with others. The tables have proven benefits: helping people who are living with dementia to develop their communication and cognitive skills and mobility.
