Cascade (Moore House)

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
Our son appears settled and content at Moore House. He feels able to express his anxieties to staff, this is encouraged and acted upon by his support team and managers. He has regular opportunities to access the wider community and there is good planning and preparation around this.
Our son benefits
from developing close relationships with staff. Staff shortages and changes over the review period (including the departure of the house manager) have caused difficulties but these now appear to have been addressed. There are now larger numbers of staff members who understand how our son can best be supported.

Moore House has been brilliant with my son and learning how he behaves and how to behave in return. My son has unique ways of interacting and when anxious relies on correct responses to aid in easing these anxieties. Amazing patience and understanding with residents and all the differences between residents.
The home is clean and tidy and well kept. Residents regularly have social visits out of the home to suit their needs and abilities and likes.
Staff are friendly and accommodating.
Communication between the home and myself has been the only niggle I've had, but this was addressed and dealt with immediately.

My twin autistic sons have resided at Hurst House since its first opening. I was attracted to Hurst House because it replicates the style & set-up of a conventional family home.

Both boys presented with problematic behaviour emerging from the chaos of the Pandemic lockdowns but Hurst strove hard

to address those issues. They quickly realised they would benefit from having adjacent rooms.

The boys have settled in very well at Hurst & unless they are ill always seem very happy. One likes to go out regularly while likes to stay home, which is catered for. They also have regular holidays organised by the staff.

I have always found staff very welcoming & friendly. They encourage family visits. It is easy to communicate with managers & they keep parents in the loop with information. On the rare occasions a concern arises, they respond promptly & proactively.

I like that Cascade is able to retain staff and facilitate their career progression. It provides familiar continuity.

Utterly brilliant. There are lots of reasons for this. All staff, at whatever level in the system, are caring, cheerful, professional and productive. They also have a lot of insight and the flexibility to make the right kind of tactical changes at the right times, whilst still keeping a very sound
sense of structure, health, and a great home for all. The charity backbone of this is very important. (My previous experience of profit-let companies thus far has made me wish charities dominated the sector). This place has a wonderful ethos.

Relatives too are listened to and worked with, with a strong and appropriate sense of care, professionalism and good humour.

I took a while to adapt to communication lines, because there are so many great staff with a genuine interest and key role in care that you have to know where to start, who to cc, etc... A nice problem to have. (At the last place contact was a question of "who's the good one", but here it's all of them!) I am truly grateful.

We are very happy with the improved quality of our son's life since moving to live at Charlton House - it is Outstanding.
He receives such willing support from great members of staff, and it is of real benefit that there is genuine person centred planning there.
His life is improving
in a variety of different ways, and, with growing confidence, he talks about it as 'his home' - I believe that our son, like us, would give well deserved five star/excellent ratings in all of the given categories.

Staff are amazing and really willing to go that extra mile to offer care and assistance. I have a good relationship with Staff who have taken on complex and additional tasks for my son's health and well being. He has had excellent personalised support for a mini holiday to see his favourite football
team play.

I'm impressed with the standard of care at Cohen House. The care staff are kind and cheerful. My son is treated respectfully and it seems a stimulating environment. The house itself feels comfortable and looks attractive. There is a nice garden with a trampoline which my son is keen on. The food is
good and my son (who has been a 'picky' eater & underweight in the past) is now at a healthier weight. He is non verbal but communication is facilitated through PECS and he is learning life skills, eg helping with cooking and clearing away. He has a tutor who visits and he joins in with craft activities. My husband and I are regularly kept informed by staff by phone and email, as well as chats in person when we visit to take our son out or take him home for the weekend. All in all we are happy with his care.

At short notice, my son was able to attend the theatre, the staff were really accommodating with this, even though it was rather late when he returned.
If l have any issues, it is always easy to contact a member of the management team, and things are quickly resolved.

I'm thrilled with how well my son has settled in to Moore House. I'm impressed with how the staff have taken on board suggestions from his school and from me. Knowing him is so important to understanding him and being able to support him. The staff have done a fantastic job of getting to grips with
his sensory motor exercise program. This is a key method to helping him regulate his body and behaviour. His carers have introduced him to lots of new experiences, such as rock climbing and animation art. He is really blossoming!
I sometimes feel that there are loads of different staff members, and I hope they can all get to know him well enough. I realise that Moore is a brand new home, so I'm sure this will settle down. I feel confident that I can always talk to the manager and team leaders who do seem to understand his needs well.

My son, who is a resident of Cascade Care Home, had to be rushed to hospital. He was extremely ill, I was away at the time and could not visit for a few days. I was kept informed by staff of how he was doing and staff remained with him as much as possible. They ensured that hospital staff knew he was
autistic and how he liked to be treated.

My son transitioned into Cascade (Cohen House) Care Home during Covid, so he and I got to meet several staff one-to-one for a couple of hours each (outdoors!) This creative management idea meant I got to know some of his carers, who were unfailingly interested, caring, committed and very human. Staff
continuity is so important with lads like mine, so credit to Cohen House that staff turnover stays as low as possible.
This is not my son's first care home, so I can make the comparison that Cohen House is a thousand per cent better than his previous place. I have full confidence in the care; activities; staffing levels; professionalism; management and 'culture'; physical environment; communications and his health care.
He's happy coming for regular home visits to 'Dad's' and equally happy going back to Cohen House.
Crucially, whenever I have raised suggestions or concerns, management has used my feedback constructively and always with a focus on my lad's best interests.
Top-notch staffing and management; I hope his home for life!

The care staff are always friendly and warm towards my daughter. My daughter seems happy and comfortable in the home, e.g. she is always happy to return after a home visit and she is using more shared spaces in the home. There is plenty of space in the home which allows her to have her own private space
when it is needed, which is important to her. Care staff are knowledgeable of different strategies to use to support her in everyday activities. Communication is generally good between the home and us (as parents). We have on occasion had to advocate on her behalf about certain things relating to her personal care or what she needs - as she cannot ask for things herself. It is important to always put yourself in her shoes about what she needs and how she might be feeling.

My 27-year-old son started living at Cascade (Hurst House) Care Home last October 2021. The transition was bespoke for my son, I feel that the management and staff really listened and took on board my concerns from my son moving there after living at home with me.
The support they gave us was amazing
and a very smooth transition, some hiccups to be expected but I felt and still feel comfortable voicing any concerns that I have.
My son has his own brand new flat but spends most of his time socialising with the other young adults that also live at Hurst House.
The atmosphere is amazing and full of life, just like a busy household full of young adults, although I think there are only eight who live there.
Hurst House is also a registered school with an education room where teachers come in regularly and again a bespoke learning plan for each individual.
Hurst House is a bright, spotless, spacious house but also has a snug/sensory room upstairs if anyone wants to relax and chill out.
Everyone seems so happy there.

I am always able to contact the manager and team if needed. Any concerns are always addressed and I am kept up to date with my son's progress and needs. The staff have found new activities for him to expand his independence.
With the death of his father (during Covid) the team handled the situation
professionally which was reassuring for us and helped with our grieving process.

I was collecting my son for a home visit and I was impressed with the way the staff cared for him, nothing is too much trouble and he obviously realised that he loves his home and is very settled. The home organised his day with plenty of variety, he is engaged with all the staff and residents and he
seems very happy, this is very comforting for his family.

My son has been living at Cascade (Hurst House) Care Home for eighteen months. He shows, at times, very challenging behaviours and becomes very anxious and scared.
He moved from a home where he lived for nine years and was very settled. The transition from there to Hurst House was a difficult one
for him but the transition between the old home and Hurst was planned professionally and with the most care for my son. And since that day the level and the right mix of professionalism and genuine care and support for my son has remained a constant. There have been changes in staff and residents join during the last eighteen months and they have put everything in place to make sure my son dealt with these changes, he was supported so beautifully.
The management and staff are all as one. They are a team, from a family's perspective, that works together to give our young people the best life possible.
You walk into Hurst House and are greeted by big smiles from staff and residents alike. My son in turn continues to smile thanks to them.
