Review from Cassie A (Great-Niece of Resident) published on 27 March 2023 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience
I visited my Great Aunt here after hearing she had been placed on end of life care. The exterior and interior were in poor condition and upon entering into the lobby, we were immediately hit with the stench of urine.
My bed-bound Aunt was on the 4th floor. Her bed was behind the door and so she was not visible to staff. There was a friendly cleaner in her room who answered questions, but she loudly asked my Aunt if she recognised us - she did not suffer with any memory issues; her illness was physical, so this was not appropriate.
The buzzer to call for help was out of my Aunt's reach; she couldn't move well enough to reach it. No staff checked in on her during the 45-60 minute visit, aside from the cleaner; I saw no evidence of care, end of life or otherwise.
She had a glass to drink from which she couldn't lift, and had only 4 stained straws to drink from which were tucked behind the TV.
She wasn't eating because she found the food terrible.

The home is not fit for purpose.

I am more than satisfied with the care shown to my mother during her stay. The staff are doing their best with the resources available.
This is an older establishment but it is the care and attention given to the residents that matters.

Well done to all concerned.

Originally gave a review stating that I was not satisfied with the manner in which communication between relatives and the staff at the home did or did not take place. However, these issues have now been fully resolved and addressed and there was a complete misunderstanding of what was going on and more than satisfactory explanation has been given. My wife and I are now more than satisfied that the issues have been fully resolved and now on this basis we can fully recommend without reservation the quality of care and communication from the management and staff at the Laleham. We are more than satisfied that this home operates to the highest of standards.

My mother is a resident in the retirement home. The home has done extremely well they have enabled us to visit my mother in her room where they have seated her in a comfortable chair where we can sit beside her. Mum has extremely poor sight and hearing so being in a quiet controlled area we are all able to spend time together and communicate with each other. Mum is now 104 and is unable to hear my voice.. My wife is able to place an ice-cream cornet in mums had and touch her lips with it and mum eats it on her own. The staff at the home enable us to enjoy our visits with Mum. It makes a difference.

The home does treat the resident with respect. The fabric of the home could be improved with a more modern and updated feel. Making better use of the garden and garden room. Residents need daylight/sunlight (vitamin D) the garden could be made more attractive and residents should have access outside if they want it. Generally very happy.

Overall, the standard of care is good. Mum is very happy here and feels safe and secure which is very important to me. However, there are times when there do not seem to be enough carers, only, this appears to be mainly at the weekends. Mum does find some of the other residents can be disruptive which can be stressful for her.

The overall care at the Laleham is excellent and the location is wonderful. My mother-in-law is content there and is very happy that we chose Laleham for her. The attention shown to the residents by the staff is superb and relatives are always made to feel welcome.

The care home staff seem friendly when we visit, the manager approaches us to ask how we think the resident is doing from our point of view. The staff and manager are quite approachable if we have any questions.

My sister was resident at The Laleham for almost two years. During this time she was always happy with her care and surroundings. The staff were always willing and helpful at all times. My sister had no problems that went unsolved. Medical treatment, when necessary was competent and sensitive to her needs. Her room was just to her liking, it was warm and comfortable.
During visits she talked about the pleasant outlook from the front lounge overlooking the pier and seafront gardens.

I would like to thank the staff for their care and attention.

Laleham is in a lovely central location on the sea front overlooking the promenade and pier. There is always a warm, welcoming and comfortable atmosphere about the home.
Carers and the manager are lovely with residents, patient, kind and treating them with respect. There is also an excellent level of openness and honesty from all staff with relatives.

It was a good move for mum and the family all know that she is safe, being well looked after and cared for very well.
