- Worsened language and communication issues, forgetting what they are saying mid-sentence. Not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- More frequent confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Advanced Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "severe dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Severe memory problems. Not recognising family members and friends. Not being able to recall their own name
- Severe language and communication issues, not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- Severe confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Verbally or physically aggressive behaviour

My mum has been at Northfield house for over a year. It was initially a discharge team decision not ours as not local to family but seeing my mum (after my dad died) so happy and settled ( she had dementia and severe anxiety) we couldn't bear to move her! Her social worker also agreed.
The manager Anna was so helpful and kind and the rest of the staff are a caring, happy, stable team ( I always saw the same staff each visit - no agency staff!)) who were so caring to my mum and clearly knew her likes & dislikes. My mum was a fussy -eater but always enjoyed the food that I could see was home-cooked.
The staff were always very accommodating with visits and we were always made to feel so welcome.
It is a small, family- run home which felt very safe and calm - I never saw an agitated/ disruptive resident which I think helped that atmosphere.

Overall Experience
Mum has been a resident since May 2024. Going into care was difficult for mum and us but the staff are so caring she soon settled in and we felt relieved she was safe and looked after. The carers are amazing, they will always have a chat with you and they are lovely with mum whose dementia has sadly worsened. Even though mum is less able to understand where she is she feels safe and cared for. The staff will always make you a drink and make you feel welcome. The management team are also very caring people and they ensure the standards are maintained. The home itself is clean and tidy and some rooms look out onto the lovely garden (mum's view is lovely). Overall I highly recommend Northfield House to anyone looking for the best care within a compassionate and safe environment. They are wonderful.

Overall Experience
My family and I found the home to be immaculately clean and very welcoming. The staff were very friendly and addressed all our needs. My mum arrived in very poor health with a fall, unable to walk and bed-bound. The staff and OT gave wonderful care and my mother is now able to walk with a frame. We would like to thank the staff for their professionalism and efficient care. Thank you.

Overall Experience
We are always made welcome when visiting mother and always offered a drink and somewhere to sit in private. The staff and management keep us updated with mothers care or her requests. As a family we are all happy that mother is in a safe place and cared for with respect and compassion.

Overall Experience
I would like to say after my step father resided here, that everyday we were overwhelmed with the high standard of care, empathy, and cleanliness of the place. The staff were incredibly welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The liaison between management and myself leading up to my stepfathers death was second to none and will be eternally grateful for his final weeks being spent in such a wonderful family home.

My mother has been here for over 2 years, she has dementia. The staff are fabulous, my mother loves living here. She is well looked after, the place is spotless. The food is homemade. The respect & duty of care the staff have for my mother is fantastic and also to our family when we visit.

The care is excellent, I have no concerns.
My dad receives care respectful of his needs i.e wanting interaction with other residents. But taking into consideration his need for extra rest, and time to watch his own TV preferences. They will ensure any health concerns and needs are acted on quickly.

My father has been a resident of Northfield House for quite a while now, from the initial hospital discharge to settling in to the care home environment my father needs and requirements are meticulously met with high standards and a warm welcome so much so that he is happy and content in the care home something I thought my father would never adapt to.
I love how my father often talks about the meals and how he enjoys them which is a great accolade to the care home given that he is a fussy eater and the staff have to manage his dietary needs for his health issues.
As a family we like to visit my father regularly as we consider this a big part of his well being Northfield House are always accommodating with open visiting without an appointment something we appreciate to fit around our busy lifestyles and work commitments.

My experience with my husband being at Northfield Home, they are very caring and patient and they all seem to love their jobs. The home is well organised and every client looks very comfortable.
The home seems to be making improvements all the time. I had lunch with my husband and the food was delicious.

I can't put into words how happy I am with the care of Northfield House. I looked after my husband for as log as I could manage. The staff and management are wonderful. The care home is spotless and has helped me relax knowing my husband is in superb hands. I want to say this experience has been a positive one. Overall Experience
All of the staff are outstandingly caring, cheerful and polite. I visit several times a week, and have done for over 2 years, and I'm always impressed with the cleanliness of the whole of the premises and the incredible dedication of every member of staff to ensure that all residents are very well cared for. It's always a pleasure to visit my mum knowing how fantastic the care is.
