My wife has been in Canal Vue for over three years now, during that time she has been looked after by wonderful staff, they are all so kind & caring, they give her lots of love & cuddles, which she enjoys so much. She loves to get involved in all their conversation they make sure she is kept clean & showered. All the staff are so loving and make her laugh a lot, cannot fault the way she is treated. Well done everyone, you are all superstars

Received a call from Management on 25th November giving me 28 days to move my husband who has Alzheimers. He had been there for 2 weeks. She told me there were 33 incidents of bad behaviour-none of which I had been informed. (Even though I visited frequently and had been told that everything was ok). When I asked to see the Incident Log I was refused. I managed to acquire a copy and the incidents were normal behaviour for someone with Alzheimers. One incident said he refused to put his slippers on! It said that he didn't understand that he couldn't walk around and enter peoples rooms. People with dementia don't understand rules or being told their behaviour is not appropriate. Management don't seem to be aware of this. They were told about his behaviour but say they weren't. I don't feel they assessed him properly. Before the move I was told of lots of activities. In reality staff seem happy to make residents sit around when the activities person is unavailable. The homes policy is to rotate staff daily between floors so residents don't see familiar faces regularly. I don't think this is good for people with dementia.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and we are sorry to hear that this experience was upsetting.

We understand that Alzheimer's and dementia can present complex behaviours, which are approached with compassion and understanding by our trained staff. In some instances, ongoing assessment shows...

Welcoming and helpful staff. My relative was well cared for during her stay.

Team communicated well at all times with the family. There were plenty of activities my relative could do if she chose to.

My mother has been at Canal View for two years now. The care given to her has been very good. She is loved, safe and well cared for. The whole team from cleaners, catering, carers and management all show dedication, love and work to a high standard. My mother has been on end of life care for 4 months now. This care my mum has received now extends to supporting myself. I cannot thank the team enough, their excellent.

Reasonably happy with mums care, although she has had too many hearing aids go missing, as well as both top and bottom sets of her false teeth!! Which we still haven't replaced due to them being over £800 per set and despite putting names in the majority of mum's clothes, she still gets other peoples clothes.

My husband has had a fantastic time while in respite here. He was looked after so well and the staff fell in love with him. He has befriended many of the staff and got on well with other residents in the home. On a personal note, I want to thank the staff for all they have done for both, my husband and I during his stay here.

My Dad was placed there as he kept having bad falls at home very regularly and it was very hard to manage anymore. He has dementia and Alzheimers he has settled in. I can not fault the home at all. The staff are always friendly and available if they are needed. Keep up the good work. What I like is there is always some kind of activity happening, so much better than another care home my Dad temporarily stayed in.

Review of Canal Vue from H M (Friend of Resident) published on 14 December 2023 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

Excellent friendly kind caring staff. Lots of activities for the residents to take part in. They even do the ladies' hair and nails which I know made my friend feel so much better about herself. Safe environment just like one big family. Excellent food especially teatimes with at least 6 sandwich fillings to choose from and homemade cake. Very clean, all rooms are cleaned daily. The office staff helped us a lot and the carers are second to none. The grounds are kept nice, good parking, and safety measures are always in place. Never saw a member of staff sat down unless doing paperwork. Lots of fundraising events and hard work put into these and planning. Even had an ice cream van visit during hot months. A great home with the best of carers and office staff.

Mum has settled into Canal Vue very good. She doesn't ask if she's going home now. The carers are very good with Mum. The full-time carers that is, agency workers don't seem as caring, there is a language barrier with some of them and they don't interact with Mum as well as other carers.

Reply from Francesca Elverstone, Manager at Canal Vue

My aunt has been in Canal Vue Care Home for a few years and she is always happy and smiling.
The staff are so accommodating, caring and make time to talk with me. Lovely staff, all of them, from the head of care to the girls sorting the laundry.
My only concern is that some of the staff call my auntie "sweetheart" and "darling", it's only small but I am so keen for her to keep her name.
Some pictures of old Ilkeston would be great too on the walls or a folder.

Thanks everyone, especially the staff on floor one.

Awful. My Father went to Canal Vue after leaving the hospital, he has mixed dementia and is non-mobile. During the first few weeks, he had a total of 3 falls from lack of supervision. I have never experienced a lack of caring like this setting and as a family, we found it very stressful that every time we visited there seemed to be another issue, they lost his clothes and ruined his shoes and left him in a half-dressed, often dirty mess.

Needless to say, my father has now moved to a home that cares for his needs. On the day that he left some of the staff were not helpful and very rude.

We are incredibly sorry to hear this. It is a shame you didn’t take the opportunity to speak to me or take up our invitations to visit and discuss.

We would never show anyone lack of care, respect or dignity. In fact, our respect for his dignity extended to replacing his well-worn slippers - at...

The home literally helped my mum to get back on her feet.
My mum arrived at Canal Vue Care Home after a difficult time. She had recently been taken into hospital and she was discharged to help her to convalesce.
I personally found the staff always to be very helpful and they were always very nice to my mum and in good spirits as they cared for her.

The home had a lovely atmosphere and would be somewhere that I would personally recommend.

My parents were placed at Canal Vue in January 2022, temporarily for assessment. Throughout their stay my parents couldn't praise the staff enough, saying how kind they all were, how they only had to "ask and it was done", and they also commented regularly on how nice the food was and how much they got LOL. We as a family were very reassured at this difficult time and can't thank the staff enough. From our experience, I would not hesitate to recommend Canal Vue.

Mum was in Canal Vue Care Home temporarily after a fall. The staff were very kind, thoughtful and caring. Food was great. Nothing was too much trouble. Mum had a lovely view of the canal from her room and enjoyed watching the swans and ducks on the water. Lovely home.

My mother has been at Canal Vue for a year now following a spell in hospital and we have been extremely pleased with the way the home have looked after her. She was struggling in her own home, but since moving to Canal Vue her disposition has improved immeasurably and she is now very calm and seems reasonably happy, having always said she wanted to stay at home.

The activities coordinator has been particularly helpful to both Mum and ourselves in arranging chats over Zoom as we live in Guernsey and are unable to get over to the UK due to the Covid travel restrictions in place. Mum seems to have struck up a friendship with the activities coordinator despite her loss of memory and depends on her for our chats which is much appreciated by ourselves. A big pat on the back to her.

Reply from Caroline Carraher, Care Manager at Canal Vue
We are pleased to hear that your mum has settled so well with us, it is a big step leaving your own home. It is good that she has been able to participate in the activities and that our extra efforts to ensure communications with relatives are working.

Thank you for completing the review. It is most important during these difficult times that the staff get the acknowledgements that they deserve.
