The Firs

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
The care at the Firs is excellent, and my mother has everything she needs. I feel totally confident leaving her there. The home is let down ONLY by the standard of food, which, while obviously adequate for sustenance, is fairly poor. Vegetables are often overcooked, the food is fairly repetitive.I understand
that it is necessarily institutional, but I honestly think there is room for improvement within budget. I believe that possibly some training for the chefs could improve things. This has been an issue that I have regularly raised, but things haven't improved greatly. However, I want to stress, that this is the ONLY fault I find. The staff are wonderful and nothing is too much trouble, no matter what my mother's problem may be.
Reply from Harriet Hawkins, Registered Manager at The FirsThank you for your feedback. We are delighted to hear that you are happy with the care your mother receives and that our team provides the support she needs. I will pass on your kind comments to our care team. We sincerely appreciate your honesty regarding the food, We agree the food we provide should be visually enticing as well as nutritious and I take your comments about overcooked vegetables and lack of variety very seriously. We are currently reviewing and updating our menus to offer greater variety and choice, we will also be looking at mentoring and training for the chefs. Thank you again for helping us identify areas where we can improve, please feel free to reach out directly if you would like to discuss this further.

Following a hospital admission after a fall and temporary delirium resulting from a combination of dehydration, infection and antibiotics as well as physical frailty, my mum was temporarily placed in this care home to convalesce. The staff have been friendly and professional throughout and have looked
after my mum very well. She herself has told me that they are very good. Out of the categories below 5 out of 5 in all except two which I rated 4 out of 5. Personal dignity because my mum felt slightly uncomfortable when she was washed or dressed by male members of staff though I told her this sort of thing is common in care settings. Happens in hospital all the time. And safety and security because there was a minor issue with the door to her room which was nevertheless quickly resolved.

The care staff that I have met were kind and helpful but there are not enough. Residents sometimes have to wait for a very long time for anyone to answer their bell. I appreciate carers can be tied up with a resident who is unable to do anything for themselves but my friend is paying for a service she
is not getting.
Reply from Carole Fellows, Manager at KenwynThank you for taking the time to share your feedback.
We are pleased to hear that you have found our care staff to be kind and helpful. However, we are sorry to learn of your concerns regarding response times to call bells.
Please be assured that we make every effort to respond to residents promptly. There are occasions when staff may be supporting residents with complex or urgent care needs, which can affect response times. We continually monitor our service to ensure that residents receive the support they need as quickly as possible.
We value all feedback, as it helps us to continually improve the quality of care and support we provide. We are always happy to discuss any concerns in person and would welcome the opportunity to better understand your experience and address any issues you may have.
Please feel free to speak with Carole, our Manager, or one of our Team Leaders on shift if you would like to discuss this further.

My mum has been living in The Firs for some time now, and we are very happy with the care she receives. She is well looked after, and the staff are always friendly, kind, and respectful of her individual needs. They also do a great job of keeping us informed, which gives us real peace of mind.
Recently,
there has been an increase in activities, which has been wonderful to see. It's especially nice seeing mum taking part and enjoying herself more.
The home itself is always well maintained, and the rooms are clean and comfortable, creating a pleasant and welcoming environment.
We truly appreciate the time, care, and effort that all the staff put into looking after our mum. It means a lot to our family.

My husband has been in Cambrian Lodge for 16 months and he is very content. All the staff are amazing, they all treat the residents with dignity and respect and all take the time to ask how I am. The food is excellent and all home cooked. There is a variety of activities for the residents to join in
if they wish. The balcony has recently been planted up with hanging baskets and pots and a new addition, wall mounted boxes with a variety of herbs, the residents helped with this and also planted individual pots of sunflower seeds.
All the rooms are clean and comfortable.

Ashley House

from Mary C (Daughter of Resident) published on 5 June 2026
Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My 92-year-old mother recently moved into Ashley House after many years of living independently with carers visiting three times a day. For a long time, she preferred spending most of her days alone but as everyday activities became more difficult, it was no longer safe for her to live alone.

I have

been so relieved and pleased by how well she has settled in. Clare and all the staff have been incredibly caring, patient, and supportive, working hard to help her adjust. Most amazingly, they have encouraged her to join in social activities, something I never thought possible. Clare has even sent me videos, and it is wonderful to see my mother smiling, participating, and far more physically and mentally active than she has been for years.

I feel completely confident that everyone caring for my mother is giving her the very best quality of life and helping her enjoy her time in comfort, dignity, and happiness.

Reply from Clare Burns, Manager at Ashley HouseThank you so much for such a lovely review. Its so nice to see how much your mum enjoying her time here. I will ensure I share this with the whole team.

My Aunt's end of life care at Lavender Court has been of a very high standard. The staff have been very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Regular checks on her well being were done for the whole of her residency. Questions arising from myself and her niece were answered promptly and fully
so that we were always aware of her condition especially towards the end of her life. My Aunt was a particularly demanding person but that did not seem to phase the staff and they were always respectful and understanding. One hears of horror stories in the press about some care homes treatment of their charges but in the case of Lavender Court, they are at the opposite end of the scale. I would whole heartedly recommend Lavender Court to anyone.

We worked so hard to keep my 97 year old mum independent. One week into her move to Cambrian Lodge we suddenly wondered why we had waited to make the move. Mum looks better in herself with regular meds, meals & company, and we can spend quality time with her rather than stressing about every day tasks.
Mum feels respected & cared for and hasn't looked back once. Why did we put this off?

My Aunt has been through every type of care possible in Lavender Court, from when she arrived as a feisty, not easy to please elderly lady, until now at the age of 95 and sadly on end of life care.

Unfortunately I had to put my mother who has dementia in Ashfield home, followed by my stepfather who is in and out of hospital with Parkinson's and health issues, but relived they are together, each one has there own spacious bedroom.
I am full of admiration for the kindness, attention and so much
patience from the team there.
So touched and grateful towards Nelly the manageresse that not only spends time with the patients , has a chat in Italian with my mother, and who several times went to visit in hospital my stepfather and gave a chance to have a chat and see my mother via video call with Nellys phone as my mother was so anxious beeing by herself.
Another bonus there, is the most delicious (I tried them) fresh meals cooked every day and so varied,
I find it is also an important issue.
It is so reassuring to leave my parents there as they are so well looked after.
I am very grateful , THANK YOU.
