Oakdale Care Home

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My Mum was here for four months. The room was excellent, large, bright, good furniture and a great tv. The food was excellent, Mum loved meeting the chef. Activities looked really fun, Mum couldn't attend the main ones but she loved meeting an owl. The nurses and the staff on the nursing floor made
a big difference to Mum. A good chat, a laugh or an extra kindness all made a difference. And we as family got to know them too and they and the office team helped us during our vists. I will always thank the gentleman who was Father Christmas. So many staff who had a smile and helping hand. I wish it was easier to get staff as Mum would say how hard they worked especially when some were off ill, so things had to take longer. Mum chose to go here as she already knew the home and how friendly it was. They were very supportive. Thank you all.
Reply from Lesley Brock, General Manager at Oakdale Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review of your mother's stay with us. It was truly a pleasure to care for her over these past four months, and your kind words mean the world to our entire team.
We are so pleased to hear that she enjoyed the comforts of her room and, of course, the food! We will be sure to pass your compliments along to our Chef-he always appreciates it when residents take an interest in the kitchen.
It is also wonderful to know that the "smaller" moments-a chat, a laugh, or the visit from the owl-left such a lasting impression. We strive to create a warm, vibrant environment, and it is heartening to hear that our nursing and office teams were able to support your family as well. We will also make sure our "Father Christmas" receives your special thanks; he'll be delighted to know he brought a smile to your mother's face.

My Father In-law sadly passed away 29th April 2026 peacefully. I would like to express gratitude not just from me personally but on behalf of my Father in-laws family and wife Maureen. He was looked after with such care and content by all staff, it gave us comfort knowing how well he was being treated
at Oakdale. I would also like to take this opportunity to mention how amazing Leena was with him and myself. Always friendly and helpful and gave that personal touch as if she were a friend of the family which essentially she became whilst Neville was there. I would also like to thank Leslie the Manager who always kept me informed and nothing was ever too much to ask- we couldn't have asked for more.
I would strongly recommend Oakdale Care Home to anyone needing somewhere for a loved one and are concerned about making the right choice.
Reply from Lesley Brock, General Manager at Oakdale Care HomeOn behalf of the entire team at Oakdale, please accept our deepest and most sincere condolences. We are profoundly moved by your kind words during such a difficult time for your family and for Maureen.
It was a genuine privilege to care for Neville. He became a part of our daily lives here, and knowing that we were able to provide him with comfort and contentment in his final days means the world to us. Our goal is always to provide a home, not just a facility, and hearing that you had felt that "personal touch" is the highest praise we could receive.
Thank you for the "Special Recognition" Your mention of Leena has been shared with her, and she was incredibly touched. She truly valued the bond she formed with Neville and your family. For her, being treated like a "friend of the family" is exactly why she does this work.
I am equally grateful for your feedback in how you felt I treated you all as the manager of Oakdale care home. It is a privilege to do the job we do. Thank you.

My Father Neville spent his last couple of months at Oakdale ,the care and attention he recieved was excellent, from Lesley the manager right down to the cleaning staff, nothing was to much trouble ,my parents owned several nursing homes in devon and for both of them to say the Oakdale was the best one
they have been in is quite something, I would recomend this Nursing Home to any one who needs there elderly loved ones to be nursed in any way.
Reply from Lesley Brock, General Manager at Oakdale Care HomeThank you so deeply for your incredibly kind words and for taking the time to share your feedback with us.
It was a sincere honour for the entire team at Oakdale to care for Neville. He was a truly gentle man, and in every sense of the word, a gentleman. His presence is missed by all of us here.
Coming from a family who owned nursing homes yourselves, your praise carries a very special weight. Knowing that both of your parents regarded Oakdale as the best home they have experienced is the highest compliment we could hope to receive. Thank you.

My father was in Oakdale Care Home, for over 6 years. My wife and myself, cannot speak highly enough of the quality of care that he received from the core staff, throughout his time there.
Nothing was ever too much trouble for them and they always made sure that Dad's needs were met, with a happy disposition
and a bright smile. Dad used to really enjoy the laughs, banter and teasing that he received and DEFINITELY gave back in return.
The Home offers a wide variety of activities, which are carefully planned and thought out by the Activities Team. They decorate the Home beautifully at Christmas time and throughout the year, for 'themed days'.
The food offered at the Home, is delicious and nutritious. Dad used to particularly enjoy his 'cheese plate'.
The Housekeeping Team work hard with the laundry and keep the home looking bright, clean and welcoming.
As Dad started to decline, it was always such a comfort to us to know, and to see, how much he was truly loved and cared for by everyone
Reply from Lesley Brock, General Manager at Oakdale Care HomeOn behalf of the entire team at Oakdale Care Home, I would like to sincerely thank you for sharing such a heartfelt review of your father's time with us.
It was truly a privilege to care for him over the last six years. He was a wonderful part of our community, and our staff fondly remember the "banter" and laughter he shared with us. Knowing that he gave as good as he got certainly kept us all on our toes and brought a lot of joy to the home.

I was so delighted that mum was able to come to the Oakdale Care Home for her final days. It was an honour & privilege to be with mum during her last weeks with us. A very special time indeed. The staff, the manager, reception, nurses, carers & even the cleaner only added to the beauty of the experience.
They were highly respectful, full of compassion, and took a holistic approach to the care provided.

Manager friendly & welcoming & supportive. Reception staff friendly & welcoming. Nurses professional, caring. Care assistants very caring of patients & family visiting. Overall experience - There's some fantastic people who work there they see the whole person and do their jobs with sensitivity and
care. Even the cleaners, just the little things that makes it a bit easier to visit, like the cleaner who saw me coming would open the doors for me and smile. Thank you so very much to you all for looking after my mother in her last days.
Reply from Lesley Brock, General Manager at Oakdale Care HomeOn behalf of the entire team, I would like to offer our deepest condolences to you and your family. Please know that our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

We are incredibly touched that you took a moment to share such thoughtful feedback. It is heartening to hear that you felt supported by our management and reception teams, and that our nurses and care assistants provided the professional, sensitive care your mother deserved.

We truly believe that "the little things," like a warm smile or a held door, are essential to providing a compassionate environment, and it means a lot to know those gestures made your visits a little easier.

Thank you for your kind recognition of our team's dedication to seeing "the whole person." It was an honor for us to care for your mother and to support your family.

On visiting, mother always seems comfortable, clean, happy with food and content. Generally happy with the home. There have been issues, which have led to her legs contracting and now she is bed bound, how much of this was poor management and how much her age/condition is hard to know. Communication
about this issue was poor but has since improved.

When my husband first came to Somerleigh I was concerned he might find the change of lifestyle difficult. He had been used to an outdoor lifestyle playing rugby, cricket and in later years golf together with the social side attached. He suffers from incontinence, so his ensuite room is ideal. The staff
are very considerate and caring in many ways - not just medically, but also finding him a sports channel on TV! Also taking him to the local pub each week for a couple of pints. On visiting, I have made friends with the staff and always feel comfortable. Many thanks Somerleigh!

Dad (Bob) took a while to settle in with the new surroundings of being in the home, but very quickly it was obvious that Somerleigh was the place for him. He gets very well looked after, and has got to know, and he likes the carers who look after him, and has a great rapport with many of them. Dad is
happy, and that makes us all happy. His energy and symptoms appear to have improved significantly since being settled. Well done, Somerleigh.

I would never recommend this care home, my husband did not get the care he needed, if I didnt attend everyday to supervise his care he would have been left alone with no attention. I also saw residents in dining room crying with no care, carers prioritising washing up to attending to residents care.
My biggest regret my beloved husband died in such an uncaring place. Terrible place, don't send your loved one here.
Reply from Helen Lacey, Care Home Manager at Great Oaks Care HomeThank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am deeply sorry to read your comments, and I want to begin by offering my sincere condolences on the loss of your husband.
I have recently taken up the role of Home Manager, and I was very saddened to read your account of your time with us. What you have described is not the standard of care, dignity, and attention that we expect for any of our residents, and I am truly sorry that you felt your husband did not receive the care he deserved.
Your comments regarding residents being left without attention and staff appearing to prioritise other tasks over residents' needs are extremely concerning to me. Please be assured that I take this feedback very seriously. Since starting in my role, I have been reviewing staffing practices, daily routines, and staff training to ensure that resident care and wellbeing are always the absolute priority.

I am very pleased with the care and support, the care home provides, especially as staff numbers have been cut, which makes it hard work for them to look after the residents. All the staff are very helpful and very kind to my brother-in-law. I am very impressed with the meals they provide and how lovely
and clean the home is kept. The entertainment that is on every day is first class. Also the management run the home amazingly well. Well done to all of you.
Reply from Lesley Brock, General Manager at Oakdale Care HomeThank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are absolutely thrilled to hear that you are pleased with the care your brother-in-law is receiving, and I will be sure to pass on your compliments to our catering, housekeeping, and entertainment teams. They will be delighted to know their hard work is making such a positive impact.
Regarding your observation about our team, I would like to provide a little clarity to put your mind at ease. Our staffing levels have not been reduced. As a care provider, our staffing model is designed to be flexible based on the dependency levels of our residents. This means we "step up" or "step down" our staffing numbers in direct alignment with the specific care needs and acuity of the people living with us at any given time. This ensures that our team is always positioned exactly where they are needed most to maintain the high standards of care you've observed.

My brother came into the home end of June this year after 5 months in hospital with a stroke. He has severe learning difficulties and the staff have been wonderful to him. He loves his new home and loves to go to the activities every day. We all as his family go to see him three times a week, he's always
happy and is making lots of friends and his life is full. He's also making the residents smile!
Reply from Lesley Brock, General Manager at Oakdale Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to share this truly wonderful feedback. Hearing about your brother's positive experience, especially after such a challenging period following his stroke and five months in the hospital, means a great deal to every member of our team.
We are incredibly proud of our staff's commitment to supporting him and ensuring that his needs are always met with understanding and care.
It's absolutely heartening to know that he is not only happy in his new home and enjoying the daily activities, but that he is also making friends and making the other residents smile. That joy and connection is exactly what we strive to foster here.
We appreciate you and your family for your frequent visits, which clearly contribute so much to his vibrant, full life. We will continue to ensure his happiness and well-being remain our highest priority.

My Great Aunt stayed at Somerleigh for some respite care. Obviously was hesitant to begin with but now back at home, has nothing but positive thoughts about her stay. Lovely home with friendly staff, who made her feel at ease and couldn't do enough for her. My Aunt isn't ready to stay permanently but
would definitely go back for a much needed rest.
