The Malthouse Residential Home

from S W (Daughter of Resident) published on 28 April 2026

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
We suddenly needed to find a care home for my mother and I knew of The Malthouse because I had visited my uncle and aunt there and had such a good impression. She has been there for two months now and we have been very pleased with their care. She has told us that she likes it there and is well looked
after and the people are kind. The scale and interior at The Malthouse are cosy and homely unlike many such places and it has a pretty garden which I know my mother will enjoy. Yesterday was her 90th birthday and we did not until recently expect to be celebrating it with her in a care home but it was a lovely happy day. The staff had gone to some trouble to make it look very festive and were so helpful. It is clear from my dealings with the staff so far, that this is an exceptional place and the people working there really do care. The activities they put on are marvellous - my mother has not had so much social interaction in years and she has been on several day trips too.
Reply from Debra Wyke, Home Manager at The Malthouse Residential HomeThank you for taking the time to review our home. We are so pleased to be able to care for mother here and thank you for choosing our home. We look forward to making many more happy memories for both your mother and yourselves here. Thank you for your kind words and this will be passed on to the team.

Dad was transferred from hospital at short notice, he was in a very poor state of health, mentally and physically.
The staff at Blandford Grange could not have been more welcoming and their care of Dad has been examplary. He is now alert and fairly active for a 92 year old and always looks smartly
turned out.
Any problems are always brought to my attention quite promptly.

My mother was accepted for a respite stay at The Old Vicarage as she had become increasingly unwell and I had become unable to meet her care needs at home. My tour of the home, her assessment and swift admission were all conducted with the utmost professionalism and kindness. Sadly she had to be admitted
to hospital in the evening of the day she arrived, and this too was handled swiftly, efficiently and effectively. I cannot rate the staff highly enough for their attitudes of care and kindness.

Brilliant care is provided at Ashely Court. Everyone clearly cares about the residents and they are always friendly, making time to chat even when busy. The home is clean, warm and a cosy atmosphere. The extra activities are very thoughtful and make a difference to the residents' welfare and happiness.
I have confidence that everyone is well looked after and treated with kindness, respect and dignity.

My sister was admitted to Ashley Court following discharge from hospital.
She was originally a temporary patient but is now a resident, which is a relief for me.
The nursing/carers and management are all very kind and caring. She now tells me she feels safe and is very happy there. Also, thank you
to the activities team.

Old Vicarage was my mother's first choice of care home, having visited a number in the area. It did not disappoint. Mum has a lovely room and soon it felt like home. The staff across the board were friendly and professional, and I felt mum couldn't have been in better hands for the 5 1/2 years she was
there. Her last months were handled wit great care, dignity and compassion. Thank you, everyone.

On the whole pleased with conditions. Gone to old age since being here. Lack of introduction and details of residents. Such a variety of folk! Lack of staff observing when attention is needed. I am disappointed there is no transport anywhere ie surgery and doctors do not seem to see patients when required.
I would like to know more about patients so able to make them feel at home.
Reply from Martin Kirkup, Director of Marketing & Sales at The Old Vicarage Care HomeIt is lovely to have you here in our home, and we are delighted that you are happy here. Sadly we have limited influence over the surgeries which - like in so many parts of the country - are over-subscribed. But we are able to arrange transport when it is required. We will have to find a way to help you get to know more of our residents, though we have to also be respectful of their privacy.

Staff are extremely kind & caring, my mother is well looked after. However, residents do not appear to be listened to, sometimes decisions are made that seem to determine the advancement of managerial success rather than residents comfort. Many residents report having dry slush - could the water softening
be investigated. Baths should be more accessible. Pressure cushions for use in dining chairs & other similar measures to make eating from a height appropriate as well as residents being allowed more choice in where they sit would facilitate better meal times. Make better use of upper floors, consider extending rooms to add on individual bathrooms & sitting areas.
Reply from Martin Kirkup, Director of Marketing & Sales at The Old Vicarage Care HomeThank you for taking the time the time to leave a review. You have now met in person with our regional manager and I trust that it has fully put your mind at rest on the issues you have raised. The issue with the water softener has been investigated and is being dealt with. Regarding seating we give our residents a choice of what suits them best, our decisions are always made in the best interests of residents.

The use of the upper floor is something we have considered but, along with extending rooms, it comes at a cost that would make the accommodation unaffordable for some, and we do have to give proper consideration to that. We pride ourselves on being one of the most affordable homes for self-pay residents in the local area, as well as one of the most picturesque of course!

During the five and a half years Mum was a resident at The Malthouse she received excellent care. Family members were always given a warm welcome and were kept well-informed aout Mum's ongoing care needs. During her final days palliative care was administered sensitively and we were contacted when there
were any changes in Mum's condition.

All staff are very welcoming. Always keep me uptodate with my fathers condition. Careplan is regularly reviewed. I visit most days and I am always welcomed with a cup of coffee and cake/biscuit. The care/nursing staff are very good with my father who can be agitated at times. Medication is also regularly
reviewed.
