Oaklands Nursing Home

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My mother moved into Oaklands in February 2025. The rooms in the new wing are spacious, modern and ensuite with her room having direct access to the garden. The communal living area is nicely styled and comfortable with doors to a sun terrace. This is where the activities (singers, craft, games etc)
take place. The bedrooms in the original part also appear nice in passing.

The most important part is care. I really can't speak highly enough of the care she has received. The staff are genuinely caring and friendly not just to patients but also to the family. My mothers requirements (dementia and unable to walk) are high needing turning regularly and fed (with a lot of patience), having food liquidised (actual meals not just fortified readymade). I have seen the chef doing his rounds taking orders and meals appear of high standard.

The best thing I can say is that when I leave after visiting I don't feel worried about her care, which I suppose is all we can hope for.

Reply from Beti Koder, Acting Manager at Oaklands Nursing Home

Thank you very much for the kind words. Our award is happy resident and happy families. I am really glad that our effort is obvious and appreciated. I will make sure my staff are aware of your comments. To add on, it is never difficult to be nice to a family member such as yourself and your father. The devotion you both show to your mom and wife is very much admirable and is inspiration for all of us to do and be even better.

My mother has now lived in her new home at Charlton Kings for 5 months. From the outset I have been in awe of the care and commitment from all the staff. Before mum moved a senior staff member video called her to chat, reassure and allow her to ask questions, mum lived some distance away and I needed
to be with her, the staff member did this on her day off. Her move into CK was smooth, entirely due to the kindness, thoughtfulness and friendliness of every member of staff. I visit frequently and every time I witness an interaction between staff and residents that seems to be beyond the basics of care. I feel the residents are genuinely loved, respected, liked and their needs, however complex are always the priority. I feel very lucky that we were able to find such a compassionate and caring home for my mum where all her basic care needs are considerately met with dignity by such thoughtful and kind carers. My mum talks to me about how lovely, kind and supportive she finds all the staff.
Reply from Jan Makin, Manager at Charlton Kings Care Home

Dear Jo, Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a heartfelt review. We are truly delighted to hear how well your mum has settled and that you feel reassured by the care and kindness shown by our team. It's wonderful to know that the efforts we make to create a warm and supportive environment have made such a difference to both of you. Your kind words mean so much to the whole team - they are passionate about providing not just care, but comfort, dignity and genuine companionship for every resident. We feel privileged to care for your mum and will continue to do everything we can to ensure she feels happy and valued here at Charlton Kings Care Home.

Mum has been in Alsley Lodge for nearly 8 months after coming out of hospital in December and myself and other family members are very impressed with the care she receives and the improvement in her health and well-being.
The atmosphere at Alsley Lodge is always cheerful, the staff are compassionate
and professional, and genuine care is always given. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and any medical needs are dealt with promptly whilst keeping me informed. We can visit Mum at any time of the day and are always made to feel welcome even at their busiest times.
The activities team are excellent and there are always several activities on each day and trips out which Mum thoroughly enjoys. Mum has her hair done every week in their hair salon which enjoys.
Since Mum has been at Alsley Lodge we have had peace of mind as we know she is getting excellent care 24hrs a day and are happy that she has settled in so well. We honestly cannot fault them.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
As soon as I visited Hallamshire Care Home for the inspection tour, I could tell that this home was different from all my other visits, I was not wrong.
Apart from being a beautiful building with lovely gardens, the home was spacious, well decorated, clean, all the essential facilities, well equiped
carpeted rooms for the residents and with a lovely smell of home cooking.
I have joined my wife on several occasions for a meal and both myself and my wife have thoroughly enjoyed all the meals served.
For me the home has ticked every box, including the activities which are twice a day, seven days a week and are very varied, but the most important point for me are the staff.
Every one of the staff are professional, expert in their own field, pleasant and always smiling, compassionate, hardworking and nothing is too much trouble for them.
Not only do they look after my wife but they also have been a great help to me as this has been the hardest decision in my life.

Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My mum has recently moved into Hallamshire Care Home after living on her own with Alzheimer's disease for 2 to 3 years. Mum got to the stage in her illness where family support and Carer's helping out 4 times per day was no longer practical or safe, and her quality of life had deteriorated significantly.
Unfortunately, we were at the point where the illness was winning and it wasn't going to be beaten.

Everyone at the care home has made mum and her visitors feel really welcome from the first day. I'm sure this is why she is so much less anxious and confused, and it's obvious that she also feels safe and comfortable.

Moving into this care home has improved mums quality of life so much. The illness won't go away, but the calm environment and great staff have made life so much easier for everyone involved in her care, despite the challenges she faces.

The service of the care home is as much as could want and the team are always willing to hold the hone for me to speak with my mother (as I live some distance from the care home). In addition the care home is receptive to my occasional visits. My mother (who is now immobile and limited in her interactive
abilities) seems very well cared for.
