Gildawood Court staff have gone above and beyond in caring for my mother, who has been diagnosed with dementia. Everyone, from the reception staff to carers and managers have been great with my mum, and kept me informed of any changes.

Gildawood Court

from Helen A (Daughter of Resident) published on 1 August 2025
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 1.0 out of 5

Our dad was placed in a D to A bed here, we had no other care home choice. Reception staff are lovely, but dad nor any of his family enjoyed this placement. The home seems very clinical, has no carpet, and we were told not to go in at lunchtime. The dietician agreed that we should go in to encourage
dad to eat; the food was awful, we took pictures of one meal, and I completely understand why dad (who loved to eat!) refused dinners. The staff were ok, but did not communicate with us. They all went for a tea break at 3pm, so if you needed a member of staff that wasn't possible. We requested a DNR to be put in place but it wasn't.

Dad has dementia, so staff would ask him him he wanted to go into the dining room or sit in the chair, but he always said, "no". They would never pursue this so he didn't get out of bed at all for the 4 weeks he was there. His mobility has always been a problem, but they have made this worse through their lack of perseverance.

Reply from Nicole Howarth, on behalf of the team at Gildawood Court

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of our home. I'm very sorry to hear that your dad's time with us was not as happy as we would want for our residents and their families. Some of our residents, especially those coming from the hospital, are particularly vulnerable, and we try to put things in place to protect them as much as possible. This includes protecting our lunchtimes so we can maintain the dignity and support of residents who need additional help, and to avoid the distractions that guests can cause. We appreciate you raising these points now; we take all feedback seriously and will review your comments carefully. If you'd like to discuss any of this in further detail, a member of our leadership team would be happy to speak with you directly. We wish your dad all the best with his continued recovery.

I am so impressed with the standard of care given at Gildawood court. My mother has been shown such care and dignity and treated like an individual. She was asked her preferences and all her needs have been met with these in mind. The team there are so kind, approachable and hard working and I can't
recommend them enough.

When I first visited Gildawood I was greeted by the lady on reception who was very friend and helpful. I was taken to my dads room which is very nice clean and comfortable. The nurses are very friendly and explained how dad would be taken care of and if we need to ask any questions. There were there
to help, the food is first class with very good choices. My dad really enjoys the food. We feel comfortable that dad is in good hands and taken care of without any worries.

Found the home smelly. Very few staff at any time. White staff can be rude. Black girls are more friendly. Untrained and taking too long to care for residents. The toilet had excrement in and the bedpan had too. I had to clean and flush the toilet. The resident is made to feel they were in the way and
made to feel prisoner.

Just cannot fault the care received by Dad at Gildawood. He went from being bed ridden and unable to feed himself after hospital discharge to being up on his feet and getting a little bit of independence back even with him living with Alzheimer's. Big thanks to all the staff. You are all amazing and
he would have definitely stayed with you if it was closer to home.

Mum's been in care for nearly 3 years and as her health has deteriorated her support has increased. I can't fault the way she's been treated throughout her stay or how the home keeps her family up to date with her changing medical needs.
On visits when staff have been present, nothing has been too
much trouble and they have taken time to talk and answer questions about Mum when asked. Thank you all for everything you do.

To me this is the best place for my mother. My mother is more safe here and more relaxed, jolly, cheeky and witty but happy to see her happy within herself and the people who care for her all of the time. You can see this in my mother's face when we see her, we love to visit as much as possible.
Five

Overall a good place. Dad was upstairs on a discharge to assessment. Nice enough room however could have done with hoovering and cobweb removal more often!
There are a few members of staff who really made things for Dad.
Food was a massive issue. I took meals in every day for Dad.

My mum has been here for over 6 months now and I am so happy with the care she receives. The staff are great and she loves the activities and social events. From a personal perspective, the support that the staff and management have given to me during this transition has been wonderful. Making a decision
for a loved one to enter a care facility is difficult and Gildawood has been very supportive.

I viewed Gildawood prior to my mum becoming a resident. I knew straight away it was the right home for my mum. It just felt right - the atmosphere, the location and the home itself.
What I had not bargained for was just how fabulous the staff are. They go above and beyond to support my mum. Even when
staff and my mum are not aware I have arrived, I can see the relationship they have with her.
I can't thank them enough! Everything is just perfect!

Shortage of qualified staff. Agencies used do not speak properly to residents. Sometimes too quiet. My husband has not had his teeth cleaned or false teeth stuck in for over a year. I have mentioned this numerous times. Overall the staff are very pleasant and friendly. Loss of property is a constant
complaint. Outside garden could be made more resident-friendly. Seats shaded areas and paths to walk on grass area is very uneven.

My dad was neglected to the point he developed a nasty fungal infection and was taken to A&E. I was told I was going to be contacted by the manager and wasn't to discuss my complaint.
Still waiting for communication from them. And also hasn't communicated with me to see if my dad is ok.
Very let
down and upset with the care received.

My mum came here on discharge from hospital for respite.
The staff were very relaxed and friendly. Residents could come and go as they pleased, mix in open-plan lounge area or spend time in their rooms. It was a very person-centred care home. The rooms were lovely, and looked clean, meals looked very
nutritious, plenty of choice and healthy. My mum is a fussy eater. I had peace of mind that my mum was well cared for and safe and more importantly she was happy.
Management were regularly seen on the visit and well led. Mum developed friendships with others on the unit, who were staying as well.
My mum was reluctant to go to the care home but she had a positive experience and so did the family.

Since my wonderful father has been in Gildawood, all the stress has left me. I will never forget the manager's first words as I left Gildawood on the first day I left Dad there, with tears in my eyes. She said "You can go back to being his daughter and let us take over" and that has been so true. When
he is unwell and waiting for an ambulance, they sit with him. They phone us with updates. A lovely gentleman carer shows him funny clips on social media and makes sure he has football/Bond films on TV.
