My wife due to medical complications had a relatively short stay in Elderwood Darlington I thank all staff for their exceptional support and the care they provided. I/we were very impressed by the welcome we received from many staff who were employed at Elderwood for a number of years their attention to detail and kindness was very much appreciated.

My husband received good general care, although at no time was his 'care plan' ever shared with me. Some of the staff were worthy of particul note - Liz, Gaber the handyman, Shima and Angela care staff to name a few. There were times when I thought some of the staff hadn't received sufficient training. There was a programme of activities published but my husband was never invited to attend. I accompanied him to a few activities.

Where do I start my mam was a resident for 14 month until she passed away yesterday. From day one the love an care she got of all the staff from laundry, cleaners, maintenance man, kitchen staff, carers, team leaders, adnin staff and finally management was unbelievable. I have never met people like them in my life so professional and dedicated to caring for people in need. Upto my mams last few days the respect for her was mind blowing we as family were treated like royalty.
The staff have become friends to us and I will miss them so much.

The only complaint is that I can only give 5 stars

I'm writing to express my heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional care my aunt receives at the Manor. The facilities are beautifully maintained, with her room always kept clean and tidy. The staff treat her with the utmost dignity, going above & beyond to make her feel like part of an extended family. The housekeepers are friendly and approachable, contributing to a warm environment. The activities offered remind me of five-star hotel entertainment, ensuring residents are engaged & happy. The food is delicious and home cooked, with chefs always willing to accommodate special requests, loves her black pudding. It is evident that management leads with excellence, as the entire team from maintenance, admin to front of house, everyone works seamlessly to provide outstanding support. Knowing my aunt is safe and well cared for allows me to enjoy our time together as her niece rather than her caregiver, which brings me great peace of mind. The carers & team leaders are angels in disguise.

From being extremely reluctant to placing my Mum in a care home I am pleased to say that I couldn't have wished for a better place to look after her than at Elderwood, Darlington. My Mum has been a resident there for just over a year now and she has a beautiful cosy room and has made some lovely friends. Ann and her team are truly wonderful, so caring and understanding to not only my Mum's needs but to myself and my family. I can have total peace of mind that my Mum is being looked after 24/7.

It's like a home from home, very friendly, warm and welcoming. Excellent.

Review of The Manor House Barnard Castle from C A (Respite Resident) published on 20 March 2026 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

Staff excellent, rooms very nice, especially newly refurbished common rooms/spaces. Some attention needs to be made to bedrooms, e.g armchairs far too low to get out of, especially for residents/users with knee issues. Some furniture is showing it's age, e.g very worn arms, in-adequate cushioning, some upholstery badly stained and some chairs smelt of urine. Meal ordering times felt rushed, although food was ok - not always hot. Clothes not tagged quickly enough, hence some items went missing. These comment should not be viewed as a criticism of the staff, but just general management issues. Medicine was dealt with well - overall experience was very positive.

My Mum has recently become a full time resident of Elderwood Care home. We chose it because of the friendly staff, most of whom have been employees for a long time. The staff always speak directly to Mum, not through us and are very kind and helpful.
On admission everyone introduced themselves to Mum, including the chef and nothing is too much trouble.
The staff are also patient and kind to me, as after years of taking care of Mum, it is hard for me to reliquish control of her care, and they get that!
Her room is spotless and warm, her clothes are always clean and she is as happy to be looked after.

The food is plentiful and of good quality and I can now sleep at night knowing my Mum is being cared for 24/7

My 93 year old aunt has dementia and has been a resident at Elderwood for over 2 years now. She has a comfortable cosy ensuite room, good food, entertainment if she wants it and most of all wonderful caring staff who look after her very well.
We are not local ro the area and visited several care homes before we found Elderwood. We were immediately impressed by the lovely homely decor and the friendly welcoming staff. Anne Marie gave us a guided tour of the facilities and it was eye-opening just observing how the staff were interacting so naturally with other residents, so friendly, helpful and caring. The atmosphere was lovely and the residents smiling faces and happy banter they were giving back spoke volumes.

We had not found that in any of the other places we had seen.

It has been the best decision we have made for my aunt. She is very settled there and all credit must go to the wonderful staff at Elderwood who make an exceptional team.

I am at the end of a spell of respite care recovering from major surgery. I have found experience to be as my scores excellent. All staff are very courteous and caring. Greet you as though you are an old friend which immediately puts you at your ease. Its like a dining out experience daily with a wide and varied menu - and no washing up! The coffee lounge is a bonus for us and our visitors. Loads of activities morning and afternoon to keep our minds active. I have met some lovely residents and have made me feel very welcome. All of my visitors are impressed with The Manor House and all agree that choosing to stay here for my respite was the best decision.

The care that mum received in The Manor House Care Home in Barnard Castle was excellent. All of the staff that I interacted with were so friendly and caring and they went out of their way to make it feel like a 'home'. Her room was lovely (I especially liked the fact that her door looked like a proper front door) and the home itself was spotless and welcoming.

Review of Elderwood:
Aunt has been a resident for over a year now and we found the home to be very welcoming from the first visit. We were shown around and given a full explanation of the set up, routines , rooms etc.

My aunt quickly settled in and the caring staff are very friendly and provide excellent care for her. The rooms and facilities are good and there are activities throughout the week which she can participate in. She loves anything musical/singing and there are quite a few sessions around this. The hairdresser and manicures available each week go down very well and she is kept very clean, smart and presentable. No complaints here :-)

Since my nearly 100 year old mother with dementia moved into Elderwood Care Home in Darlington 2 years ago she has flourished with the care she has received. the staff are attentive and friendly and look after mother and the other residents very well. There are always activities such as bingo, singing, quizzes etc to keep you entertained . Also at meal times the choice and quality of the food makes me very envious. So overall it is an excellent home to move to in your later years.

Review of Elderwood from Rachael M (Daughter of Resident) published on 6 February 2026 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

We had a terrible time with emergency respite in another care home, so we visited lots of care homes so we weren't in that position again. Elderwood was our first choice, felt homely, carpets kept the noise to minimum, straight corridors (nowhere to hide or get lost), all staff spoke to us and when the time came Dad was welcomed with open arms. Although Dad was only there for a month, the care, dignity, dedication, and overall friendliness of everyone was amazing. We were all made to feel so welcome, encouraged to be part of Dad's life and to ask questions. Mam was always welcomed and offered to attend events, activities and even Christmas dinner. Everywhere was clean, additional care supports (like a toilet frame) were given without us having to ask, laundry kept clean and cloths never lost. Overall everything and everyone were amazing, which reflected in the atmosphere. We as a family feel so grateful and appreciative we found such a home from home for dad.

My wife sadly passed away in Elderwood care home this year after 6 years in their care, I have nothing but praise for the way my wife was cared for by the staff of Elderwood during her time at the home. My wife was suffering from dymensia so needed some special help and she received this in spades from the staff of Elderwood. If I ever need to go into a care home I would like to think that I would be cared for in Elderwood. Thank you to all staff at Elderwood. My wife was always kept clean and tidy, the food was good quality , both her clothes and room was always clean and tidy.

My husband has been in Elderwood for 2 years, and I have never known such a dedicated staff and management. They are the most helpful, pleasant and caring people you could wish for to look after someone you love. When I go home I never have to think how he is being looked after because I know they all care. 100%.

I am very happy here - very helpful staff, and any requests are always attended to. Staff are very good, cheerful and polite. I am lucky that usually I am able to get out to the town. A weekly hairdresser is an asset. Food is good, and the additional menu makes an added choice for residents. Always good help, when necessary from management. I would recommend this home to outsiders if asked.
