Overall my experience was a very positive one but here are a few constructive comments that may be useful to follow up on.
Room: I didn't take a small mirror in with me and unfortunately found the mirror in the bathroom was too high for me to use. It would have been useful to have had a shelf in the
bathroom to put toiletries on.
Food & Drink: The first week I was in, the food and drink were excellent but the second week from Tuesday onwards, the food did not relate to the menu so was confusing and it wasn't the same standard as the first week.
I would like to stress over all, every need was attended to and I was looked after with kindness and compassion. I would particularly like to thank David, Anu, Harmony and Chloe.

From the introduction to assessment and placement of my Mum the workforce have been respectful, insightful, sensitive and knowledgeable.
There responses to questions and meeting my mums needs has been excellent.
On mums placement in the home the quality of staff from welcoming and caring for my mums
needs has been excellent.
The home is really pleasant with a great atmosphere and welcoming environment.
I have already recommended the home to others looking for homes for parents

Mum, who has vascular dementia, has just moved after spending six months at Scarlet House. I cannot speak highly enough of the friendly and professional atmosphere there. There was always a cheery greeting from helpers and residents alike and I so enjoyed taking Mum to the cafe, where it felt more like
a posh hotel than a care home! Mum also enjoyed many of the activities. Adrian and his team handled Mum's transition from home to care home living marvellously and both Mum and me were very sad to leave everyone. Mum was only moved to be nearer to me. A huge thanks to all for such a lovely experience in difficult times.

Sandfields

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
In September 2025, four years into her dementia journey, my 79-year-old wife had to go into a Care Home as a permanent resident. Unfortunately, we then had awful experiences with the local Charity owned Home so, with help from family and friends, I was especially careful to scrutinise a better alternative.
We chose Sandfields after several exploratory visits and informative meetings with senior staff. When she moved into Sandfields in January 2026, we were introduced to team leaders and everything was done very professionally.
Two months later I'm very pleased with my wife's care at Sandfields. Every aspect of the service provided deserves considerable praise, but three things currently stand out for me; the jolly comfortable home atmosphere, excellent communication by the staff and the innovative Activities timetable.
In my view, Sandfields Care Home deserves to have its Jan 2023 CQC "Good" rating changed to "Outstanding".
Reply from Holly Cole, Reviews Team at SandfieldsHi Frank, thank you very much for taking the time to leave us feedback about your experience, they are wonderfully kind words.

We are sorry to hear about your previous experience with another care home, but we're glad that you found us and your wife has settle in so well.

We will relay you wonderful and kind words with the team,

Many thanks the Care UK team

My father received excellent care during his respite stay. The staff were warm, professional and truly compassionate in the way they supported him.
They took the time to understand his needs and kept us informed, which gave our family reassurance and confidence.
I would highly recommend this respite
service to anyone needing quality, respectful care for a loved one.

My aunt needed respite care after a fall at home. We approached Sandfields who arranged a home assessment and my aunt was admitted the next day. Since arriving at Sandfields she has enjoyed the food, had medication given on time, loves the activities, thinks the staff are very caring and kind and we
have seen a huge improvement in her physical and emotional wellbeing she has since decided to make Sandfields her permanent home and we are delighted to support her decision and feel that Sandfields is the right place for her to live.

Thank you so much to David, Aleah, Adrian, Jason (sorry - I don't know his surname) and all the staff at Scarlet House. You couldn't have been more helpful in getting Dad settled in at late notice, and over the Christmas period too. Really, you guys have gone above and beyond.

Moving into a care

home is obviously a big adjustment and the staff go to enormous lengths to make their residents feel at home, respected, listened to and valued. Dad is very fond of all of you.

It has been a huge relief to know that Dad is in safe hands and I especially appreciate how welcoming the Care UK team make visitors. There are no visiting hours, tea and coffee are always available and I have never had anything other than "good vibes" from every single member of staff.

Thank you so much for all your efforts.

I would like to thank Jancy who have been wonderful with her calm approach. Her 10 years experience is very evident in her organization skills & empathy which is so important as a nurse.

I would also like to praise all the staff here at scarlet house, I am really happy with the overall service of

care, all the careers do a great job in supporting me and all other residents who live here. I moved in on a respite stay and am due to go home on Thursday this week, within this time I have been supported and cared for within my rehabilitation, to allow me to be able to return home.

I couldn't recommend Scarlet house and all the staff enough. Thank you

We have received excellent service from the moment we arrived at Scarlet House to look around with Dave. We are so grateful for his patience and understanding during Mum's visits to look at rooms and trying to decide if this was the right move for her. Since Mum moved in, Dave has continued to engage
with Mum and the family to make us feel welcome and ensure we are happy.
Jenna was very warm, caring, thorough and understanding when she visited Mum at home to do the assessment which meant Mum felt very positive about moving the Scarlet House. And she has continued to engage with us since Mum arrived.
And Louise & Jancy, the nurses on Mum's suite are delightful and again very approachable, caring and always make time for the family and Mum if we have any concerns or questions.
And finally, I would also like to say what a delight all the staff/carers are. Always a smile or a wave and in particular Louise in Mum's suite who understands Mum's needs and desire to look nice.

Mum has lived in The Hollies for 6 months. From the first reassuring nurse visit at her own home to her settling in with her own things around her we cannot fault the kind and cheerful caring she has received. The staff all appear to enjoy their jobs, the food is amazing and our whole family has felt
very supported by the nurses and managers.

I, when visiting, always receive a warm welcome from entering Scarlet House to when I leave. The staff have made all effort to get to know me even as a weekly visitor. My friend is calm and content on the whole, and has accepted that it is now home. The staff are attentive, kind and considerate, making
all effort to chat with her even though they are always very busy. When the day comes for me to go into a home, I would be happy to be in Scarlet House.

From day one I knew that I had made the right decision for Mum. The staff have many priorities when introducing a new resident to their new home, one of the most important was spending time and energy getting to know the needs and wants of Mum, making her feel comfortable and safe. Mum has been living
in Scarlet House for five months and has referred to it as home within a few months of moving in.
This is due to the expertise and warmth of care delivered by the staff, I couldn't have asked for more.
Scarlet House has a very proactive attitude for care and a very positive environment for my mum to live in.

I can't praise Holly Oak or recommend them enough based on our experience. Dad has been here a couple of months and we have found the level of care to be outstanding. The whole team are so very well linked up right from our arrival with Dad to the end of life care phase we are now unfortunately in.
The carers themselves are not just delivering a service as a job, they all genuinely care, show immense patience, respect and love for the patients and you can't buy that, that's all down to the dedication, integrity and empathy of and every member of the care team. The dignity, communications and connectivity we have had from the nursing team as things have changed, along with the support they provide to us the relatives in helping and supporting us all through a very difficult time has made a difficult time so much easier, removing the stress as we know we have done the right right thing for Dad. Thank you to the whole team at Holly Oak.

A very real fall-off in quality regarding communication since the Hollies was taken over by Care UK. Yes, I have received occasional emails informing me about life there - and they have been appreciated - but getting a positive response to an on-going problem with my mother's landline has proved impossible.
Over the past three weeks or so, I have emailed and/or phoned the care home regarding this matter on a number of occasions - and, although staff have been very pleasant on the phone, they have not returned my calls with an update, despite promising to do so.
Presently, I am at a loss. How long does it take to send an update to a concerned relative?
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Reviews Team at The HolliesThank you for sharing your thoughts regarding The Hollies. We are sorry if this has been your experience.

We understand the vital importance of clear and consistent communication in providing high quality care to all residents and their loved ones during their stay with us and this is something we always aim to maintain however we can.

We apologise if you felt the communication you received whilst the team were working to resolve your concerns was insufficient. However, we would like to assure you that our team always works hard to ensure all concerns are resolved as swiftly as possible and will provide updates where they are able.

We acknowledge that the issues you were facing have now been resolved however if you would like to discuss your experience further, we encourage you to reach out to us directly via complimentsandcomplaints@careuk.com

My mum came into the home in June 2025 for, originally, a few weeks respite care but ended up staying for just over a month. We moved mum to another home that was closer to us and a smaller amount of residents otherwise mum would have stayed here.
The care mum received from the staff was brilliant.
They were attentive, personal and genuine. They would engage with mum on her level, sit and chat with her or play music to her, try to get her involved with activities and encourage her to eat with others.
If your loved one is in need of specialist dementia care I would recommend Holly Oaks.

Exceptional Care and Compassion.
Our family is incredibly grateful for the outstanding care our mother received during her final week at Sandfields Care Home.
From the moment she arrived, the team showed genuine warmth, professionalism and respect; not only to our mother, but to us as a family. It
made an extremely difficult time more bearable, knowing she was in such capable and compassionate hands.
One member of staff, in particular, stood out - our mother's primary nurse. Her empathy, gentleness and constant support were far beyond anything we could have hoped for. She treated our mother with true dignity and provided comfort and reassurance to our entire family. Her approach clearly inspired those around her, as the same level of care was evident across the team.
We also want to acknowledge a senior team member whose thoughtful words during a particularly challenging moment brought great peace of mind.
We will always be thankful for the kindness we received.
