The staff at Highclere Downsbarn appear happy in their work. This shows in their attitude towards the residents & their families.
I was also impressed by the frequency of updates after doctors' visits or when an infection had flared up.
Overall, a good experience. I would highly recommend this care
home to anyone looking for somewhere to place a relative.

We are always made welcome by the staff and offered read and coffees. The communal areas and lounges are comfortable, beautifully decorated and immaculately clean.
The staff are so friendly and kind and do a fantastic job caring for all the residents. Sadly my mum has severe dementia but I can see
she is really well looked after by. Professional and caring team. Thank you so much!

I was @ Applewood for my respite after my knee surgery. It was the best decision I made for myself, as I live on my own and haven't got any available support around me. The pampering at Applewood is off the chart. Staff are so caring, its almost overwhelming! I absolutely loved being here, I know where
to go when I need this in future. Will also recommend it to friendly and family.

Àn excellent care home with staff that care for their residents. An activity programme for the week is packed with things to do or you can sit in your room or one of their lovely lounges. There is always someone around staff are eager to help. Food is fantastic and they even serve wine with meals if
you want it. The bistro is a great place to hang out either with an activity or just for a coffee with your loved one. My father in law has been there for respite but now wants to stay permanently it's such a great place to be meeting all of his needs. Thank you

Mum was sadly diagnosed with Alzheimer's and needed nursing care. Highclere Care Home was great at meeting all her needs. Staff and management very attentive and caring, approachable and easy to talk to. All at Highclere were great in Mum's last months.

My mum got to a point in life where she no longer felt safe or able to manage daily activities at home. She knew of Highclere as one of her friends had been a resident there for many years, so she chose to move to Highclere.
From day one, the staff were welcoming, efficient, approachable and friendly.
My mum got to know each one by name, and they took the trouble to chat and spend time with her. They accommodated her meal preferences and, as she declined in mobility, treated her with dignity.
Nothing beats your own home, but my mum seemed content at Highclere and thought of it as home. In her last days, the staff were particularly attentive to her increasing needs. They did their very best to look after her and ensure that she was comfortable.
As a frequent visitor to Highclere, I have only good things to say about the staff, their level of care and the way the home is managed. It is the best care home that I have visited, and I have heard similar comments from others.

My husband has been a resident here since July 2025. It was a hard decision for him to come into F.T care but because of his declining health was necessary. I cannot speak highly enough of his care. In every respect his needs are met. Thank you to all at Applewood.

At first, my sister and I were worried about whether our Mum would adjust to living at Applewood after spending so many years living with my sister and brother-in-law. However, once Mum moved in, all our concerns vanished. Applewood is a modern care home with a stunning garden and impeccably kept interiors,
featuring quality furniture and fixtures, and in addition, Mum says, "the food served at meal times is very, very good."
The main purpose of this review is to show our appreciation for the staff at Applewood. They are incredibly attentive, and nothing ever seems too much trouble for them, despite their long and often demanding shifts.
Staff at Applewood always maintain and display a positive and supportive attitude, showing genuine care for the residents and ensuring their needs are met with kindness and compassion.
My sister and I want to sincerely thank the entire team at Applewood for everything they do to care for our Mum and the other lovely residents.

Highclere is a lovely place for mum to live. The nursing, care and admin staff are so friendly and helpful. The relationship the nursing team has with the local GP practice makes medical care seem less. There are a good range of inteteresting activities and everything is arranged thoughtfully with
the care of the residents in mind. The lounge feels more like a small hotel than a care home. The food seems very good and snacks snd drinks are served regularly. I'm very impressed!

We absolutely love this place and couldn't ask for more. Absolutely lovely and supportive staff. Beautiful surroundings and lots of activities. Dad says highly efficient and place nice and bright. Nothing is too much problem. Would definately recommend. I can leave my dad knowing he is well cared for
and safe. Thank you very much.

The staff are all very kind and caring to the residents and welcoming to the visitors. The home is really lovely and well kept and feels very homely. THe meals are excellent and there is always a good choice. The residents are encouraged to eat in the dining rooms but if not the meals are served in
their rooms. Visitors are offered meals and refreshments making it nice for both the residents and visitors. The activities are varied and very good.

I am absolutely thrilled with the home overall.
The staff looking after my mother are second to none. In just three weeks she has blossomed to her old self and is doing extremely well with the fabulous service she is receiving. She is 94 years old and I could not hope for her to be in a better place.

I spent a wonderful afternoon at Applewood. All the carers were very attentive and friendly with great energy. The entertainment was excellent, the food and drink were brought out frequently and varied with healthy options.
I felt that Mum was in a safe and secure environment. A special mention to
one of the carers, who was excellent - a professional with a passion for his work.

My father moved in to Highclere in 2023 and stayed till the end over two years later.
I agree with a lot of the other positive reviews so won't repeat them but will say that I visited several local homes and think I made a good choice.
I think Highclere strikes a very good balance between keeping
the residents safe while respecting their dignity and freedoms - it can't always be easy to get it right but it helps that the management is very pragmatic.
Although Highclere is on a residential estate, it is not visible from the garden which has mature trees and a rural feel. Unlike some homes, the garden is always accessible to the residents - something my father took full advantage of.
It is not advertised but the canal is a 10 minute walk away & so during nice weather I could borrow a wheelchair and take my father to watch the boats, wildlife and adjacent sculptures - sometimes we took sandwiches.
I have some very happy memories of my father's time at Highclere.

I was reluctant to move into a care home even though my balance and mobility had become worse. I had been supported at home by carers twice a day but I was not seeing anyone apart from them and my family. The quality of my life was becoming poor.
My daughters heard about The Applewood being built
and broached the subject with me. I was very low at the time and agreed to come for a respite stay. I needn't have worried I was treated with kindness and respect all the time. I soon made the decision that I wanted to become a resident and my daughters agreed. The building and furnishings are of an exceptional standard and convey a feeling of comfort and luxury. I would recommend The Applewood to anyone. I look forward to ending my days here..
