Review of Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home from Paul L (Partner of Resident) published on 4 August 2026 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My Partner has resided at Plas y Dderwen for some 96 weeks in which time she has benefitted from the best of care throughout. This was emphasised by the celebration of her 80th birthday this week which could not have been better provided for with fantastic support from the staff to make the occasion one to be remembered by the dozen friends who attended the afternoon event and were able to thoroughly enjoy the time spent at the Home.

Reply from Emma Lloyd, General Manager at Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home

We have had the pleasure of looking after your partner within the home and delighted that she enjoyed her 80th birthday with us. Thank you.

My father has been in Hafan Y Coed for 18 months. Going into a care home was hard for him after being so independent all his life. ALL the staff have been friendly and caring towards him and the family.
I feel that everyone does their best to look after the residents as if they are their own family, with respect and compassion. They are always up-beat and cheerful. There are lots of events and entertainment to occupy the residents .Dad says that the food is very good.
There have been some times that Dad has needed minor medical attention, which was handled professionally and with consideration.
I have asked Dad how he feels about the home, he said that he has "no complaints and everyone is very good to me."

I think that everyone would prefer for their loved ones to be at home with them, but I can recommend this as a second home. I feel that Dad is safe and looked after.

Reply from Katie Sheppard, admin at Barchester Hafan-Y-Coed Care Home

Review of Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home from E D (Sister of Resident) published on 15 June 2026 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My sister suffers from servere Parkinsons since the age of 45 and from arriving at Plas y Dderwen Care Home has had wonderful care with all the staff. Eifiona has difficulty in communicating with others but the staff here have time and patience with the ability to understand her needs. Most of the time, Eifiona would love to join in most of the activities but due to her disabled hands she misses out on most entertainment.

A huge thank you to the staff and management of Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home, Dad had been a resident in the Gwili section since November 2022, he was looked after with great care and dignity, always clean and well presented, well fed and entertained. Smiled more for the staff than family at times. As a family we thank you all for your care and compassion. Diolch O Galon xxx

It can be difficult decision to place a loved one in the care of others when it is no longer possible to look after their daily needs at their own home without 24 hour support. Hafan Y Coed offers good facilities for full time residential care and when my mother's mental and physical abilities changed where it was no longer possible for her to do anything for herself, the decision to place her there was the right choice. The Nursing Staff offered 24/7 support by assisting with all her daily needs, building up a friendly rapport with her that made her feel that she was being looked after by friends, rather than strangers and they would engage her in conversation to lift her spirits and reduce loneliness. They ensured that her overall healthcare and welfare was monitored and ensured their nursing treatment was always supportive and in a friendly manner during her two years there.

Sadly my mother passed away at the age of 95, but I am content that her time there was comfortable and with people who treated her with first class care, compassion, dignity and as if a personal friend. I would like to thank all the Staff and Nursing Team for their efforts during her stay and the Management Team for their assistance and compassion in dealing with her final affairs.

My parents became residents of Plas y dderwen March 2023. My father passed away November that year. My mother has live there since. She died on 12.02.26.
Through out this time the care & attention given to them was exceptionally good.
The food, they always said, was amazing.
We were always made welcome & nothing was too much trouble.

I cannot thank the staff enough for all their dedication & help.

Overall Experience
Our family member was only in Plas y Dderwen for a brief period, but our experience, on entry, following his spells in two hospitals, was so uplifting and warmly welcoming that our spirits were immediately uplifted.

Sharon, the Senior General Manager, the whole staff, the facilities and general ambience all contributed to our initial reaction and continuing impression, that it was, without any doubt at all, a fine place, a caring haven and a home quietly exuding the inner feeling that all was well. It was clearly a 'cwtch',,,,the Welsh word for an encompassing warm hug....a hug, but 100% more in it's effect. As a family, we are so sincerely grateful to everyone for the effect, atmosphere and marvellous facilities provided. It was an experience that will forever remain in the memory and helped so much in ensuring that our relative was relaxed and comforted before his inevitable 'journey home'.

I am so happy with how caring everyone was for my Grandmother. they really do look after everyone so well and it is amazing to see. I see my Grandmother 3 times a week in the home and the staff are so welcoming and comforting with everything and they do as much as possible for my Grandmother. also the food in which they provide is exquisite and definitely deserves 5 stars. My overall experience has been amazing and outstanding would definitely recommend to others searching for a care home for relatives.

My mum became a resident of Hafan Y Coed Care Home in August 2025. It has such a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, she has settled in so well and made lots of new friends. All of the staff are attentive and supportive to the residents and their family. It is a huge decision to place your mum in a care home, I know she is so well looked after, night and day. Mum is always chatting to the staff and residents, she loves the concerts and activities too.

My grandfather transferred from a local hospital to Plas y Dderwen for end of life care. I was immediately relieved and reassured by the calm and caring atmosphere at Plas y Dderwen. My grandfather was always clean and comfortable with his hair nicely combed (as he liked it). The whole team were kind, compassionate, patient and attentive. As my grandfather came to the end of his journey, they rang us in plenty of time so we could be with him (something which was really important to me as we live 90 minutes away). When we arrived, a member of the team was sat with him, holding his hand and reassuring him. The team offered us food, drink, chairs and blankets so we could comfortably sit with him in to the night. Thanks to Plas y Dderwen, my grandfather had a peaceful and dignified death, something which is often overlooked and poorly managed. I want to say a special thank you to Kelly, Andrew and Terry for their kindness but also extend my thanks to the whole team. Thank you all!

I cannot speak more highly of the support the Manager and her team gave to my relative, myself and my family during a very difficult time whereby my relative needed palliative care following a short stay in hospital.
We were all immediately made to feel welcome, comfortable and at ease at the home. Nothing was too much for the staff.

They were professional, attentive and compassionate during this difficult time. The Manager provided advice and guidance to me personally which resulted in a seamless transition to the home where my relative was given the best possible care to the end of her life. Thank you all.

Plas-y-Dderwen exceeded all my expectations of what a care home should be. Maybe it was not the building; either inside or out; not the decor or the fresh washed linen. Not the entertainment or the well laid out gardens. When you have the quality of staff that Plas-y-Dderwen has everything else becomes secondary. Their care, love, compassion and empathy made the time my mother was there one of the happiest times of her life.

Mum was transferred to Plas y Dderwen as she had been wrongly assessed as having challenging behaviour. The lovely staff at Plas y Dderwen quickly realised she was in extreme pain and approaching the end of her life. She was given suitable painkillers and became much more comfortable. Staff were knowledgable and clear about the situation and totally supportive of her and us. They were caring and sensitive and couldn't do enough to help us all through his difficult time.

Over the ten days we were there with mum we noticed that all the other residents were treated very well, with respect and understanding.
