Too long responding to a toilet call for patients such as my wife. Her lack of mobility means that the response is often too long and the result is she often wets or soils herself.
In most other respects the staff are excellent, very caring and friendly.

I am a retired doctor with experience of Care Homes.
During 8 days, I visited Manor Care Home to see a friend who was dying. He had a cardiac condition, which made it too difficult for him to be cared for at home, and he was too old for heart surgery to correct his problem.
The first thing which
strikes you when visiting Manor Care Home is the absence of the characteristic smell of Care Homes. This is only achieved by meticulous housekeeping.
The Care Assistants who looked after my friend were always calm, kind and gentle, even when he displayed his highly developed stubbornness. Because of his illness, he was not keen to eat or drink, which did not help his condition, but it is a choice that people with mental capacity can make. This situation was handled splendidly.
I have given Manor Care Home a 5-star rating and would happily recommend it to anyone considering care of a loved one.

My mum went in to give my stepdad 2 weeks respite and the change in her was remarkable! Due to the activities and interaction with the staff, her advanced dementia symptoms improved massively and I saw that old spark in her again.
All the staff were fantastic, but particular praise should go to the
Lead Activities Co-ordinator and her team, along with the Lead Nurse and her team.
The lady in the hair salon was also excellent in making my mum look very presentable which in turn made her feel good about herself.
Excellent!!
Reply from Amanda Oxley, Operations Manager at Barchester West Abbey Care Home
Thank you very much for your kind review, we really appreciate your comments and I will pass your feedback onto the team especially the activities the Lead Nurse and of course the hair dresser.

Mum was very apprehensive going into the care home but soon settled in much to the family's surprise and delight. She was only there for 2 weeks but in that time had a couple of baths (which she thoroughly enjoyed) had a haircut which pleased her very much and made friends with a number of the other
residents. When it was time for her to return home I think she almost regretted having to leave. She may return!
Many thanks to all carers and staff.

My father has stayed at Crandon Springs several times for respite support. All staff have always remembered him and give him a warm and generous welcome, ensuring he is included in a variety of stimulating activities. His medical needs vary, and care is given to ensure they are met. Though he reluctant
to leave his house, he is happy to stay at Crandon Springs and we feel secure when he is there. (A big thank you to all staff).
He is also welcomed between stays to attend activities as a 'day-visitor', which he finds very stimulating.

I am absolutely delighted to have my friend in the care of Crandon Springs Care Home. She seems to be having a great time with the numerous musical afternoons, singing and dancing and generally mixing well with other Residents. The Activities team do a fantastic job integrating the Residents so that
they mix well and are kept busy whilst still having one-to-one sessions to make them feel individual. Also, the day trips out to Garden Centres and country walks take advantage of the lovely Somerset countryside as well as trips into Wells itself. When I visit, everyone makes me feel so welcome and cannot do enough to support us. It is just like an extended family. Thank you for all you do.

My in-laws have been at Crandon Springs since Dec 2024 initially as respite but are now permanent residents.
They have been treated with dignity and kindness by everyone as have we during a very traumatic time.
The home itself feels more like a hotel than a care home, there are no chairs in circles,
peeling paint or offensive odours as we saw on visit to other homes.
Most importantly we know that they are they are safe, warm, fed and cared for. They are treated by the staff as you would hope they'd look after their own family. If there are any concerns they are addressed promptly and we are kept up to date.
Dogs are welcome which means we can bring our dog in for visits and there are always biscuits awaiting her in reception as well as plenty of fuss and cuddles from the staff.
We just wish they would join in with more of the activities! Dad moans that there aren't any activities for the men and there aren't many men in the home to talk to.
More staff would be good for all.
