Barchester Hazel Lodge Care Home

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
Dad moved to Hazel Lodge October 2025 and settled in quickly. All staff are polite, caring and very helpful and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Hazel Lodge is beautifully decorated throughout and has a lovely garden. Dad is looking forward to the spring/summer when he can read his newspaper
outside.
Refreshments are always available in the bistro/cafe area, including home made cake available to all.
The food is excellent and the restaurant area is clean and very smart. Bedrooms are comfortable having TV and an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower.
Hazel Lodge prepares a weekly activity sheet informing residents of activities during the coming week. They also have a mini bus to use for trips in and around the Battle area. I was so pleased, if not a little surprised, that Dad decided to join in right from the start! Feedback from management and staff on Dad's progress was most welcome.
I would recommend Hazel Lodge to anyone considering a care home for their loved one.
Reply from Rikki Gene-Bury, General Manager at Barchester Hazel Lodge Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave us this lovely review, which I will share with the team . We really do appreciate your feedback on the positive experience you and your dad have had on moving into the home and we're so pleased he's enjoying all of our activities and outings .

My mother spent over three years at Lydfords before she died in early January. I cannot speak highly enough of the care she received. The team of carers are exceptional as are all the staff who work there. The carers are all mostly full time so no agency workers employed. So friendly and approachable
nothing is too much trouble. The shared facilities are smart and it feels more like a hotel than a care home. Food is good and always beautifully presented. I have recommended Lydfords to anyone who might need a care home in the future! With many thanks to all.

My mother has settled very well at Lydfords and we are delighted with the care, compassion and professionalism of all the staff. They are attentive to detail and have listened to both Margaret and us in preparing for and managing her integration. Margaret has been encouraged and supported to join in
with all activities and, despite her misgivings, she is clearly feeling safe, secure and happy at Lydfords. We feel most welcome to visit and to raise any concerns or ask questions. All the staff are receptive and helpful. We are delighted with Lydfords!

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
Friendly greeting in reception. Most staff good, some warmer than others to Mum (& myself) A few 'really' understood/knew Mum. Those who did - thankyou so much. Motto 'tailored to individual needs' not always implemented. If residents are unable to speak up for themselves, they need a relative to speak
on their behalf. Even ie how Mum liked her tea - many times I politely said to carers, also spoke to nurses about it, yet rarely did Mum get tea to her liking. A little thing, but an important one to residents. Mum was there 4yrs. Management/nurses are happy to talk with you to try resolving issues, and discuss anything about your loved one. More carers on floor 1 would benefit for more time on individual care to be given, and talking. Value for money - satisfactoryish. Care/support/dignity between satisfactory/good. Sometimes excellent. Excellent activities - wide variety, excellent activities team. Lovely that housekeeping & maintenance teams interact with residents. High security, I always felt Mum was safe. Very good end of life care for Mum (& Dad) Both were in the right place. Positively, overall is good. Thank you Dudwell

My mum came into Mortain Place in August 2025 and it's been the best decision we made as a family.
The level of care my mum has received has given her back the health, safety and dignity that her dementia was stealing from her.
The staff are all incredible. The kindness, patience and understanding
with both my mum and us the family has been incredible. We now can't imagine Mum being anywhere else.

From the moment you arrive through the door at Port Manor you are welcomed with the warmest smile and feel immediately at ease and made to feel at home. My mum has settled in so well to Port Manor, she is truly looked after in a caring and most friendly manner. The staff are a credit to this organisation,
nothing is too much trouble. The furnishings and decorations are so well thought out in residents rooms and all the other areas and I find it gives a sense of calmness. The dining facilities and food is very good and I like that we can book in for meals with mum at any time, again the staff are ready to help and help mum decide on what to choose. Christmas was a lovely experience with staff and residents making decorations and helping with making Yule Chocolate logs. I am so pleased we found this great care home and so happy mum has settled very quickly due to the expertise of the staff.

I would like to take the opportunity to leave positive feedback for the team at the care home, as our overall experience has been extremely reassuring and satisfying. From a management perspective, the home is very well run. Communication has always been clear, timely, and professional, and any questions
or concerns we have raised have been dealt with promptly and respectfully. It is evident that the management team are committed to maintaining high standards and supporting both residents and staff. The food provided is of a very good standard. There is a good variety of meals, they are well prepared, and dietary needs are clearly taken into account. Sue has been happy with the meals, which gives us great peace of mind. The range of activities available is also very good. They are well organised, inclusive, and thoughtfully planned to encourage engagement and enjoyment. These activities clearly contribute to residents' wellbeing and help create a positive atmosphere within the home.
Reply from Nancy Walford, General Manager at Barchester Port Manor Care HomeThankyou so much for taking the time to write such kind words, I will pass them on to the team who will be delighted. Initial requirement was for 2-4 weeks respite care for my mother, and made inquiries of several local homes.
Chose Mortain Place as apart from excellent facilities, from the initial enquiry through to first visit and then agreement to place my mother there, I found the whole process to be efficient,
informative, and most importantly, there was a genuine interest of what I was looking to achieve for the time that my mother was to spend there. My mother's stay has been extended and her condition has improved considerably.
I have found the staff and management to be fully engaged, and most of all, my mother has had nothing to complain about.......

My Mum, Suzann, has been in Port Manor care home for approximately a month now. The experience has been so very positive. She finds the environment enjoyable and welcoming, which has made the transition much easier. There are a lot of activities, outings, and interaction with the residence if they
choose to join in. The food is lovely and well prepared and presented. There are many well thought out and lovely touches, one being that I can have lunch with Mum. It feels like we have gone to a restaurant. The management team have been excellent, very professional, approachable, and clearly committed to providing a high standard of care. My experience moving my mother to Mortain care home.
I had good support organising the finances arrangements with the Administrator Manager all in good time.
General Manager talked through all our options with myself and my mother, and all staff gave us excellent support in moving my mother into
the care home.
My Mother received incredible welcome on her first day moving into the home, and she was made to feel so welcomed.
The maintenance team supported us in hanging up my mother painting on her walls, they were kind and supportive.
And this helped my mother feel so settled in her room.
All Mortain staff has made us feel as a family so welcomed and supportive.
Mortain care is a very warm loving care home.

Purpose of visit & pre-arranged. Rehab after hip replacement with physio. No physio available. Emma had never received my requests or any information. I was told there was no rehab available. Food was disgusting, my dietary details were ignored. Certainly nothing to help healing. Room was nice. Staff
mainly caring & skilled. Had to pay in advance - but a total waste of money. Legal opinion being sought.

Dudwell has provided brilliant care for my Dad , who became a resident in June . He looks so well- he's put on weight after enjoying the delicious meals provided. It's such a good atmosphere, with the dining room and lounge being such a nice place to socialise. My family has been through a dementia
loss , as my husband passed away 3 years ago and our 3 young children were left quite traumatised after experiencing this . My youngest daughter, who is 15 would not visit her Grandad to begin with as it brought too many memories back , but now she visits him on a regular basis- a real testament to Dudwell!
Not only has the home looked after Dad , but the biggest gift they have given us , has been to reunite my Dad with Mum . They bent over backwards to get mum a space in St Mary's ( building adjacent to Dudwell ) , so that they could be together after 60 years of marriage,.
Mum doesn't have dementia, so it's an ideal solution, as she can visit Dad whenever she wants.

The care home is a very caring experience for my mother in law and she is happily settled. All of the staff are very accommodating and helpful and ensure she has a comfortable time. Nothing appears to be too much trouble when requests for baths etc are made. The care home is warm, airy and comfortable.
My mother in law is happy with the food and eats well.
